Donation drive in Highland to benefit East St. Louis center

Twice the Ice and Horstmann Premier Financial in Highland are sponsoring a drive for the Christian Activity Center in East St Louis. The drive will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Twice the Ice, 1522 Main St. in Highland.

“I am wanting to gather items for the needs of this center, as well as less fortunate families of kids who attend the center. Many people have lots of unused furniture and other household items they want to get rid of that these families would love to have,” said Joe Hostmann, owner of the two businesses.

The Christian Activity Center serves kids ages 5-18 in the Samuel Gompers Housing Projects. Its mission is to prepare youth of East St. Louis academically, emotionally, spiritually and physically to make healthy life choices and be positive contributors in their home and community.

Items needed include furniture, cleaning and building supplies, toiletries (soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant), hand tools (rakes, shovels, wheel barrows, etc.), office supplies (paper, envelopes, etc.), snack foods, kitchen items (pans, dishes, utensils, etc.), toys and games, sports equipment (Wiffle bat/balls, footballs, basketballs, volleyballs), new socks and underwear (all children’s and teen sizes), winter clothing items (hats, gloves, scarves). A 15- or 21-passenger van is also being sought. Check out the event’s Facebook page for a complete list of items.

“CAC is funded through grants and private donations. I have personally donated my time to the center, and it was truly one of the most humbling experiences I’ve had… The center does their due diligence prior to distributing items to families,” Hostmann said.

Contact Horstmann at (618) 339-4054 or joe_horstmann@yahoo.com if you have large items, so he can make sure to have enough trailers.

Tax deductions will be available for certain items.
