Sewage problems close Weinheimer Community Center until day after Christmas
Highland’s Weinheimer Community center will be closed for the next two weeks due to an unforeseen sewage issue and scheduled semi-annual maintenance.
While the center was set to close the week after next for scheduled maintenance, sewage issues forced the building to be closed early, said Sports, Leisure and Facilities Manager Lucas Pinsker. He noted that the bathrooms are currently not operational.
The community center many area seniors frequent will close at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, and reopen Wednesday, Dec. 26. All events at the center scheduled for next week have been canceled except for the recreational basketball games, which have been moved to the Korte Recreational Center.
The more than 50-year-old building has been a topic of discussion at several City Council meetings in the past year, with removal and replacement of its furnace and HVAC unit last Monday.
In April, the city showed interest in building a new senior center to replace the Weinheimer building, even searching for an architect to design the building.
