Joan H. Napier, 85, of Columbus, Ohio, died Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Kobacker House Hospice in Columbus, Ohio.

Visitation and funeral services will be private. Burial will be in Highland City Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland.

She was born May 19, 1930 in Chicago to Harry C. and Loretto (berreither) Herguth.

At age 15 months, Mrs. Napier moved with her family to St. Louis. She attended college for two years in California, then served with the U.S. Marine Corps.

She lived at Glasgow Village, Mo., and taught in Riverview Gardens School District more than 30 years.

She moved to Highland in 1990. Kim and Steve Dyer and their daughters, Emily and Abby, were her special friends and neighbors. They loved her as part of their family and kept her out of trouble.

She was a dog lover and volunteered at the Highland Animal Shelter. She was also a member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

She moved to Columbus, Ohio, in 2011.

Survivors include daughters, Jill N. (Larry) Buerke of O’Fallon, Mo., and Jan N. (David) Prosak of Westerville, Ohio; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Stephanie) Gittemeier of Wentzville, Mo., Joseph Gittemeier of O’Fallon, Mo., James Gittemeier of Duluth, Minn., John (Katie) Gittemeier of St. Peters, Mo., Gabriel (Andrea) Barbaglia of Columbus, Ohio., Mark (Keri) Barbaglia of Indianapolis, Ind., Kate Barbaglia of New Albany, Ohio, and Elizabeth Barbaglia of Los Angeles, Calif.; great-grandchild, Victoria, Jakob, Elliot, Dylan, Gavin, Etta and Amelia; a brother, Robert J. Herguth of Glenview, Ill.; nieces, Amy Demarte of Evanston, Ill., and Jeni (Brad) Sellers of Portland, Ore.; a nephew, Robert C. (Susan) Herguth of Park Ridge, Ill.; great-nieces, Mila, Annika, Ava and Lauren; and great-nephews, Matthew, Aiden, Elijah and Luke.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials may be made to the Highland Animal Shelter or Kobacker House Hospice.
