Aaron Vogel, a 1993 Highland High School graduate and owner of Cackle & Oink BBQ from Sherman, Texas, along with teammate JR Larsen, a 1994 HHS graduate, placed in three categories at the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest.

Every year, approximately 250 barbecue teams from around the world meet in Memphis, Tenn., on the banks of the Mississippi River for supreme bragging rights of who truly has the best barbecue.

Vogel and Larsen took home third-place honors in ribs (a perfect score of 1020 points through the first four rounds of judging was exactly what it took to make it to the finals), third place in hot wings and fourth place for their mustard barbecue sauce.

The team’s Memphis sponsor was Toomey’s Mardi Gras in Mobile, Ala.
