Highland area police briefs for June 1-7

Editor’s note: The following incidents were listed among the official reports of local law enforcement agencies and court clerks. Readers are reminded that an arrest or charge does not constitute a finding of guilt. Only a court of law can make that determination.

Highland man killed in motor cycle crash

A Highland man was killed Sunday night after his motorcycle ran off a roadway in rural Madison County.

Illinois State Police responded to the scene at 9:49 p.m. on Illinois 160 outside Highland and Grantfork, where they found 52-year-old John Carter.

Sgt. Jay Miller said Carter had lost control of his motorcycle and swerved off the road.

Miller said Carter was initially transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland and then airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Lebanon man gets 25 years for child porn

A Lebanon man, who was already a registered sex offender, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for possession of child pornography.

Ryan Scott Richards, 41, received the sentence Thursday in federal court.

“We hope that such a long and well-deserved sentence will send a message to those who seek to prey upon children,” U.S. Attorney Steve Wigginton said. “The harm these predators do is vast and it lasts for lifetimes of not only the direct victims but those who must deal with these images.”

In January 2014, during an investigation by the Illinois Attorney General’s Office’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, four photos and a video containing child pornography were downloaded from a computer linked to Richards, according to Wigginton. The content included a 9-year-old girl having sex with an adult male and an animal.

Further investigation revealed Richards had a collection of 264,293 photos and 1,821 movies depicting children involved in sexual acts.
