Hockey
Highland 5, O’fallon 5
The Highland Bulldogs came out strong against O’Fallon on Dec. 9 and exploded for four second period goals but O’Fallon scored three goals in the third period to overcome a three-goal deficit and force a 5-5 tie.
Lucas Korte led the Bulldogs with a hat trick and an assist. Dominic Emig and Dylan Kreke each added a goal for the Bulldogs. Highland moved to 1-8-1 with the tie.
Girls Basketball
Highland 64, Jerseyville 48
On the night when senior guard Ellie Brown was honored for scoring her 1,000th career point, the Lady Bulldogs continued to play well and stay in the win column.
Highland rolled past Mississippi Valley Conference foe Jerseyville for a 64-48 victory at home Dec. 9.
Highland 63, Waterloo 18
A road trip to Waterloo on Thursday, Dec. 12, ended up being another good night for the Lady Bulldogs basketball team.
Highland, using their uptempo press defense, got out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter and did not look back, rolling to a 63-18 Mississipi Valley Conference victory.
The Lady Bulldogs put the game away early with a 25-point first quarter and a commanding 41-5 lead at halftime.
HHS improved to 3-0 in conference play.
Edwardsville 62, Highland 48
The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Edwardsville last Saturday, Dec. 14, to play the host Tigers in the Coaches Vs. Cancer Classic at Edwardsville High School.
Highland battled hard for 32 minutes but came up short as Edwardsville handed the Lady Bulldogs a 62-48 loss.
“It was a good game,” Highland coach Clint Hamilton said. “They jumped out 17-4 on us and we fought back to within 7-8 a few different times but just couldn’t completely get over the hump.”
HHS returns to action at home on Wednesday, Dec. 18, against Mississippi Valley Conference foe Civic Memorial.
Boys Basketball
Highland 49, Civic Memorial 43
It was the start of Mississippi Valley Conference play for the Bulldogs as they headed north to Bethalto to take on Civic Memorial.
After battling through an up and down, night, HHS had enough down the stretch, holding on for a 49-43 road win in the conference opener for both teams.
Evan Peterson paced the Bulldogs with a team-high 22 points and Cade Altadonna added 13 points.
Mascoutah 86, Highland 34
Game two of the Mississippi Valley Conference schedule did not go well for Highland when the Bulldogs traveled visited Mascoutah Friday, Dec. 13.
The Bulldogs struggled to score early and were overwhelmed by the Indians 86-34.
HHS dropped to 2-6 (1-1 in the MVC) with the setback.
Bowling
Bowling teams defeat Civic Memorial
The Bulldogs boys and girls bowling teams trekked to Bethalto on Wednesday, Dec. 11, and both teams prevailed for victories in their matches.
Molly Marshall led the HHS girls team with a 257 high game and 624 high series.
Steven Reinacher rolled the boys high game with a score of 248. Austin Roach posted the high series for the match with a 647.
Boys, girls bowling teams beat Mascoutah with record performance
Wednesday, Dec. 11, was a watershed night for the Bulldogs boys and girls bowling teams. They hosted Mascoutah and both teams came through with record-breaking victories.
In the girls match, the Bulldogs broke a high-game record with an 1,119 score and eclipsed a nine-year-old series record by shooting a 3,118. Meghan Marshall shot the high game with a 252. Molly Marshall shot the high series with a 669.
On the boys side, the Bulldogs rolled to victory over Mascoutah by breaking an 11-year-old series record, shooting a blistering 3,352. Steven Reinacher took high game honors with a 264 score and Hunter Hediger shot a 740 for the high series of the match.
Bowling teams fare well at Waterloo
On Thursday, Dec. 12, the Highland girls bowling team kept its winning ways going with a victory over Mississippi Valley Conference rival Waterloo.
Molly Marshall turned in the high game with a 231 score and rolled a 673 high series.
The boys also were successful with a win. Austin Davis led the boys’ team with a 279 high game and a high series of 692.
