Hockey
Freeburg/Waterloo 13, Highland 1
It was a challenging night on the ice when Highland took on Freeburg/Waterloo in Mississippi Valley Club Hockey Association action.
Nicholas Mumford gave the Bulldogs headaches as he scored a hat trick, as Freeburg/Waterloo exploded for five first period goals and added six seconds period goals to hand Highland a 13-1 MVCHA loss Jan. 6 at Granite City Ice Rink.
Highland leading scorer Lucas Korte was shut out on the night. The Bulldogs, who managed just 19 shots on goal, got their lone goal from Drew Tolbert in the first period.
O’Fallon 6, Highland 4
Despite rallying with three goals in the third period, the Highland Bulldogs came up short Thursday against O’Fallon, losing 6-4 at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex.
O’Fallon took control of the game with a first-period goal and three-second period goals for a commanding 4-0 lead.
Lucas Korte paced the Bulldogs with a hat trick and Jacob Knoll scored a goal. Dominic Emig had two assists.
Boys Basketball
Waterloo 51, Highland 44
Highland ventured south to Waterloo for a Mississippi Valley Conference game Friday.
The Bulldogs attempted to knock the rust off after a 12-day layoff from the Mater Dei Tournament but Waterloo had just enough juice as Highland fell short in a 51-44 conference road loss.
Girls Basketball
Highland 49, Chatham-Glenwood 28
The Highland girls basketball team visited Chatham Glenwood on Jan. 7 and prevailed.
HHS got a big night from senior guard Megan Kronk and posted a 49-28 nonconference victory. Kronk paced the Lady Bulldogs with 23 points and Bella LaPorta added nine points.
Breese Central 47, Highland 45, OT
Just five days after winning in the Breese Central Shootout, the Lady Bulldogs basketball team was back at Breese Central to take on the host Cougars in a nonconference game Thursday.
Highland turned in a hard-nosed and gritty effort but came up short, falling to the host Cougars 47-45 in overtime.
Bowling
Girls bowlers defeat Jerseyville
The Highland girls bowling team had a productive showing at Jerseyville on Jan. 8, posting a victory. Molly Marshall took the high game and high series honors shooting 225 high game and a 638 high series.
Bowling teams knock off arch rival Triad
The HHS bowling teams traveled to Troy on Thursday and had a very productive trip as both the boys and girls teams defeated rival Triad in a dual match. Hunter Hediger rolled high game for the boy’s team with a 267. Austin Davis took high series with a 705 score. Molly Marshall continued her recent strong run by taking the high game with a 257 and rolling a 644 high series.
Wrestling
Highland wrestlers finish 14th at Murdale Tournament
The Highland wrestling Bulldogs headed south to Carbondale last weekend Friday-Saturday and participated in the 59th annual Murdale Tournament.
HHS finished 14th in the 22 team standings with 69.5 points. Ben Mitchell placed second in the 145-pound class, scoring 19.5 points in his four matches.
Alex Reed finished in fourth place scoring 15 points in five matches at 195 pounds. At 120 pounds, Tanner Schranz placed fifth with 13.5 points.
Colby Davis scored eight points and finished in sixth place at 160 pounds and Gage Pogue rounded out top 10 finishers for the Bulldogs with a 10th place finish in the 106-pound division.
