Wednesday, Jan. 15:

Highland Illinois Area Schools Alumni Association Nominations — Through Friday, Jan. 31. Nominees wanted for the 2020 Hall of Fame. Persons nominated must have either attended any school in the Highland School District boundaries or been employed by any of the schools, must have demonstrated a high level of achievement in any of the categories and made a significant contribution to that particular field, and must have exhibited leadership, character and service. A brief resume and contact information for the nominee should accompany the form. Applications are available at highlandilalumni.com and due by Jan. 31. Highland Chamber of Commerce Awards Nominations — Through Thursday, Feb. 6. Help identify those that go above and beyond in the Highland community and nominate your choices. The awards are for Business Person of the Year, Bill Pierce Chamber Member of the Year, Bob Hardy Citizen of the Year, and Homer Poss Lifetime Achievement. The awards recipients will be honored at an event on March 7. Nominations can be made online at highlandillinois.com/awards.html.

Highland Lions Club Scholarship Applications — Through Monday, April 6. The Highland Lions Club announces two $1,500 scholarships. As part of Lions Club International, the world’s largest service club, the Highland Lions Club will recognize graduating seniors who balance academic achievement with community service. One scholarship is available only to senior students attending Highland High School. The second scholarship is open to all high school seniors who reside in Highland School District #5 (Highland High School senior students plus those students who reside in the Highland School District but attend a school other than Highland High School). Application forms are available at the Highland High School Counseling Center. Other eligible students should contact the counseling center at their high school. For questions, please contact Jan G. 17th annual I-70 Baseball Coaches Clinic — 5-8:30 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Monday. Greenville High School Auditorium, 1000 E. State Route 140, Greenville. Featuring speakers legendary MLB Manager Buck Showalter and Houston Astros pitching coach Brent Strom, along with Tanner Swanson (New York Yankees), Darren Fenster (Boston Red Sox) and Bill Mosiello (Texas Christian University). Radon Detection Education Presentation — 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. HSHS Holy Family Hospital, Cedar Community Room, 200 Health Care Drive, Greenville. Educational presentation about radon and testing your home. Two 30-minute sessions available. The first 25 participants will receive a free take-home test kit — one kit per household. Southwestern Illinois Regional Apprenticeship Meeting — 9 a.m. to noon. Gateway Convention Center, One Gateway Drive, Collinsville. State, federal and regional workforce personnel will be on hand to discuss the opportunities and funding available for businesses to start an apprenticeship program. Featuring several presentations by community training providers, businesses already utilizing government programs to develop and grow apprenticeship programs, and individuals who have benefitted from training as an apprentice. Saturday, Feb. 1

Rock & Roll Bingo — 6 p.m. Doors open. 7 p.m. Bingo starts. Highland VFW hall, 1900 VFW Road, Highland. The Highland Civic Woman’s Club will host a Rock & Roll bingo event. The numbers have been replaced with the names of singers and bands, and the caller has been replaced with rapid-fire song clips. Players must identify the artists and songs on their bingo card to win. Advance tickets can be purchased at The Chocolate Affair, or via the link on the event’s Facebook page — $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Bring own snacks and cash bar. No outside drinks permitted. Silent auction. All funds raised will go right back to the community through these two organizations’ projects.
