Bowling

HHS beats Jerseyville

It was a special night on the lanes on Tuesday, Jan. 21, for the Highland bowling teams.

Both boys and girls teams defeated Jerseyville in a home match.

In the boys’ match, Hunter Hediger shot a 300 game. Logan Oestringer rolled a 790 high series to set a new club record and the Bulldogs boys team shot a new game record of 1,254 and set a new series record of 3,401.

The girls were led by Carissa Merkle, who rolled a 237 high game and Molly Marshal rolled a high series of 664.

Highland boys and girls defeat Civic Memorial

The Highland boys and girls bowling teams were back in action at home on Thursday, Jan. 23, and both teams came away winners again.

Megan Marshall led the girls with a 247 high game and a 692 high series. The Bulldogs boys were led by Austin Roach and Austin Davis. Roach bowled the high game with a 267 and Davis shot a 717 to take high series.

Boys Basketball

Carnahan 70, Highland 48

The Highland boys basketball team trekked across the river to St. Louis to take on Carnahan Academy on Saturday, Jan. 18. HHS started off well enough in the first half but faded in the second half, falling to the host Cougars 70-48.

East St. Louis 73, Highland 33

It was a rough start to Salem Tournament for the Highland basketball team. Highland fell behind Class 4A power East St. Louis by 30 points in the first quarter and was never able to get going. The Flyers handed the Bulldogs a 73-33 loss Wednesday, Jan 22, at Salem High School. HHS fell to 2-16 on the season.

Girls Basketball

Highland 58, Okawville 39

Bella LaPorta led three players in double figures as the Lady Bulldogs dismantled Okawville 58-39 in the first round of the 34th annual Highland Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 18, at Highland High School.

LaPorta paced the Bulldogs with 16 points and nine rebounds. Kirsten Taylor added 15 points and six rebounds and Ellie Brown pumped in 13 points and dished out four assists.

Highland 41, Mater Dei 33

For the second time this season, the Lady Bulldogs prevailed against Mater Dei. On Tuesday, Jan. 21, Highland started solidly and finished strong, defeating Mater Dei in second round tournament action.

Hockey

Granite City 14, Highland 4

The Bulldogs skaters scored three goals in the first two periods against Granite City on Monday, Jan. 20. That success was short-lived in the second period, as the Warriors broke loose and ultimately saddled the Bulldogs with a 14-4 loss at Granite City Ice Rink.

Lucas Korte paced HHS with a hat trick and Dylan Kreke scored a goal and had an assist.

Highland 7, Alton 6

A night after getting blasted by Granite City, the Highland hockey club responded with one of its best efforts of the 2019-20 season.

After falling behind 3-1 after the first period, the Bulldogs rallied with six goals over the last two periods and held on for a thrilling 7-6 MVCHA win over Alton at East Alton Ice Arena.

Korte paced the Bulldogs with four goals and three assists. Kreke had a goal and three assists and Jacob Noll also scored a goal. Bulldogs goalie Max Price stopped 29 shots to get the win. Highland moved to 4-17-1 with the victory.

Wrestling

Highland scuffles at Hillsboro

The Bulldogs wrestling team hit the road Thursday, Jan. 23, as they squared off with Roxana and Hillsboro in a tri-match at Hillsboro.

It turned out to be a tough night for the young Highland grapplers as HHS fell to Roxana 48-28 and then lost the second dual match to host Hillsboro 48-36.
