Boys Basketball
Salem 64, Highland 24
On the start of the final day of the Salem Tournament, the Highland basketball team got taken down by host Salem.
Salem started quick and did not look back in handing the Bulldogs a 64-24 loss in Highland third game of the tournament Satruday, Jan. 25.
Thornton Fractional North 60, Highland 43
HHS had a better start in the second game of the day and stayed close for the first half but TF North gained traction in the second half and pulled away for a 60-43 win over the Bulldogs.
Jerseyville 75, Highland 64
The basketball Bulldogs started off well enough on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at home against Mississippi Valley Conference foe Jerseyville, pushing to a 17-15 lead after the first quarter.
After that, the tide turned and Jerseyville parlayed a 34-25 halftime lead into a 75-64 road win over the Bulldogs. HHS slipped to 2-19 on the season.
Hockey
Bethalto 11, Highland 10
The Bulldogs hockey team had Bethalto right where they wanted them. HHS carried a 7-5 lead over the Eagles into the third period on Monday, Jan. 27, but the Eagles responded in the third.
CM broke loose for six third period goals and outscored Highland 6-3 to upend the Bulldogs 11-10 in a wild affair at Granite City Ice Rink.
Lucas Korte led HHS with five goals and two assists. Dylan Kreke and Jacob Noll chipped in two goals each.
Triad 8, Highland 6
For two periods, the Highland hockey team had the Triad Knights on the ropes as the Bulldogs battled to a 5-5 tie after the first two periods.
Unfortunately for Highland, its archrivals proved a little more clutch in the third period and outscored the Bulldogs 3-1 in the final stanza to escape with an 8-6 victory on Thursday, Jan. 30, in a Mississippi Valley Conference contest at Granite City Ice Rink.
Lucas Korte led HHS with four goals and two assists and Dyland Kreke had a goal with four assists. Ethan McFarland paced Triad with a hat trick an assist.
Highland dropped to 4-19-1.
Wrestling
Bulldog wrestlers have tough day in MVC duals
The Bulldog wrestling team came into the Mississippi Valley Conference duals meet with hopes to finish in the upper half of the team standings, but a young HHS squad had a tough day on the mats.
Highland finished 1-4 in the meet which landed them a fifth-place finish in the six-team meet.
HHS lost to Triad 54-21, Mascoutah 51-21, Civic Memorial 51-30, and Jerseyvile 48-32 and beat Waterloo 45-36.
Top performers for the Bulldogs included Tanner Schranz at 120 pounds.
Schranz went 4-1 to claim second place all-conference honors.
Other all-conference performers for HHS included Bryce Kirsch, who got third place at 138 pounds; Benny Mitchell with a third place finish at 152 pounds; Alex Reed, who won first place at 195 pounds (5-0); and Destin Vogel with a third-place finish in the 220-pound division.
Triad won the meet, while Jerseyville finished second and Mascoutah third. Civic Memorial, Highland, and Waterloo rounded out the team standings.
