Highland Bulldogs sports report — March 11 edition
Boys Basketball
For 37 minutes Monday, the Highland boys basketball team battled with everything at their disposal to extend their hard-luck season for one more game.
HHS trailed Cahokia 23-20 at the end of the first half. But a strong second half, which included a 37-34 lead with 3:26 left in regulation, had the Bulldogs in position knock the Comanches out of the Class 3A Regional at Triad.
Cahokia forced a 37-37 at the end of regulations and then in overtime, the Comanches slipped past Highland for a 43-42 first-round win. Highland finished the season at 2-29.
Boys Track
The Highland boys track team ventured north to Jacksonville High School on Friday and competed in the Jacksonville High School Indoor Invite meet.
It was a solid and productive outing for the Bulldogs. HHS had two top 10 finishers in the pole vault as Bryce Kirsch finished second with a height of 11-11.75 and Andrew Capelle placed seventh with a leap of 10-feet.
Connor Sands placed seventh in the long jump and then placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 40;7.50.
In the relay events, HHS took 10th place in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:39.58. Senior Ethan Leftwich fared well in the 200-meter dash with a fifth-place time of 24.12
Girls Track
Just like the boys team, the Highland Lady Bulldogs traveled to Jacksonville on Friday and got some work in at the Jacksonville High School Indoor Invite meet.
Olivia Wilke did well in the triple jump, finishing fifth with a leap of 30-2.25.
Lydia Hadowsky had a good day in the jumping events as well, placing fifth (7-6.5) in the pole vault. Tanielle Thompson also had a decent outing in the pole vault, finishing in 10th place.
In the shot put, junior Taylor Kesner continued her indoor season success. Kesner, who recently won the shot put competition in the Mizzou Track and Field Series Challenge meet in Columbia, Missouri, took first place with a throw of 38 feet.
The relays also produced good results for HHS, as the 4x800 relay team place fifth with a time of 10:49.92 and took eighth in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:41.32.
Julia Loeh was solid in the 400-meter dash with an eighth-place finish. (1:10.53). In the distance events, Grace Meyer came up big with a fourth-place performance in the 1,600-meter run. (5:40.91).
