Highland boys golfers stay hot in tri-match at Legacy Golf Course in Granite City
Not even the 91-degree heat is slowing down the Highland boys golf team these days.
Highland continued its torrid roll of play Tuesday with a dominant performance on the greens at Legacy Golf Course in Granite City.
The Bulldogs stroked and putted their way to a tri-match win shooting a dazzling 149 to finish 30 shots ahead of host Granite City, which scored 179, and Mississippi Valley Conference rival Triad, which was third with a 180 score.
“We played really we and the heat didn’t slow us down,” Highland coach Brent James said. “It’s a par 36 there and we shot a 149. On that course (everything) is definitely all out in front of you and if you hit good shots you’re going to be rewarded. It doesn’t require a whole lot of course knowledge.”
Evan Sutton once again led the way for Highland, claiming match medalist honors. He fired a 34 and finished 2 under par for the day.
DJ Imig and Jaxton Black followed with strong rounds, as each shot a 38. Jake Brauns had a solid outing as well as he finished with a 39.
Aiding the Bulldogs at the outset was hitting some balls at the course range before the match got underway.
“We got there and they have a range and we were able to hit some range balls, which we don’t have at the (Highland) country club. The boys like doing that so it just like adds that layer of confidence going in when we can actually hit a few range ball first. And I think they went in (to the match) very confident,” James said.
Imig had one of the best shots of the day with a chip-in eagle.
“Dominic Imig actually had a chip in eagle on his first hole, which was actually his last hole of the day, which was a nice little surprise,” James said. “The greens were rolling pretty good and our outing was sound.”
HHS leaves Highland feeling strong
Overall, the day was near-perfect for the Bulldogs, as they broke the 150 score mark and left Granite City feeling pretty good.
“I’m very pleased, the boys are happy and feeling confident,” James said. “It’s rare for teams, though, to score under 150, so when we crack that mark it gets them excited.”
Highland will return to action at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, with a tri-match against MVC rivals Waterloo and Mascoutah at Acorns Golf Links.
