Highland girls compete at O’Fallon Invitational, host Waterloo, Columbia in tri-match
This week the Highland girls golf team Highland girls golf team got a taste of home and away action as the Lady Bulldogs started the week on the road and ended up the week at home.
HHS kicked off the week Tuesday with a short trip over to Shiloh to play in the O’Fallon Invitational at Tamarack Golf Course.
After shooting their rounds for the day, Highland placed 12th in the tournament field with a team score of 386, just one stroke behind 11th place Waterloo, and two spots behind 10th place Mascoutah (384).
“I’m very proud of our team even though we placed where did ... we had a team goal as well and we beat it,” Highland coach Ashley DeSelm said. “I know some of the girls that did shoot higher can definitely get lower (scores) and we’re hoping next week they can pull through because next week on Monday we have our home match but then on Wednesday we have our (MVC) conference (match). There’s a lot of teams that are neck and neck, so every shot counts and they know that.”
Claire Korte paced the Lady Bulldogs with a 91 which was good for 22nd place.
“Claire has been a great leader for our team this year and we could always count on her shooting lower (scores) for us,” DeSelm said.
Kalei Gould and Brooke Hunsche tied for 34th shooting a 96 each. Lilly Barker shot a 103 to finish 52nd, Maci Miles fired a 104 to finish 55th, and Raegan Henrichs shot a 105 to finish at 58th to round out the Lady Bulldogs effort.
Lady Bulldogs perform well in tri-match
On Wednesday, the Lady Bulldogs wrapped up their week with a home tri-match at Highland Country Club against Waterloo and Columbia.
Highland a solid day finishing second in the three-team match with a score of 190. Columbia won the match with a first-place score of 186 and Waterloo finished four strokes behind the Lady Bulldogs at 194.
“We ended up getting second out of the three (teams) but it was a pretty close match,” DeSelm said. “Four strokes ahead of us and then four strokes behind us, so it was a pretty close match.”
Korte and Kaleigh Gould each shot a 46 to lead HHS. Hunsche fired a 49 and Reagan Hinrichs shot a strong score of 49.
DeSelm was pleased with the balanced effort of her group.
“Yeah, it was really good and it was our lowest nine-hole match round to date, so I was pretty excited with that,” DeSelm said. “I’ve made a new goal for the girls to try to get 180, so all the girls just need to shave two strokes off their game and they will be right there, so it’s a very doable goal. They’re going to strive for that for our next home match on Monday.”
Next up for Highland golfers
Highland returns to action at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, with a home tri-match at Highland Country Club against Jerseyville and Mascoutah. Then, the Lady Bulldogs will travel to Wood River on Wednesday, Sept. 30, to compete in the Mississippi Valley Conference Tournament at Belk Park Golf Course.
