Knights of Columbus, Highland Council 1580, holds annual spelling bee event

The Knights of Columbus, Highland Council 1580, held its 40th Annual Spelling Bee Championship at their facilities on Illinois 143 in Highland on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Overall, students from six area schools participated in the event:

  • St. Paul Catholic School (Highland)
  • Highland Elementary School
  • Highland Middle School
  • Grantfork Elementary School
  • St. Rose Elementary School (Breese)
  • Pocahontas Elementary School

The spelling bee was open to all boys and girls up to the age of 16. Trophies were awarded to the top three winners and all contestants received a certificate of participation. The top three winners advanced to the Regional Spelling Bee. The top three winners from the regional will then advance to the State Spelling Bee. The winners were:

  • First place: Daniel Wick from St. Paul Catholic School
  • Second place: Wyatt Orender from Pocahontas Elementary School
  • Third place: Ella Henrichs from St. Rose Elementary School
