Man charged with attempting to stab Marine police officers
A Trenton man faces felony charges after allegedly attacking Marine police officers with a knife during the village’s recent Homecoming festival.
Marine police officers were summoned Saturday night to a fight in progress at Marine Village Park, during the annual Homecoming event. In breaking up the fight, Marine Police Chief Chris Singleton began escorting William Tyler Woods, 28, of Trenton, off the property.
“As I was escorting him off the property, I was holding his left arm,” Singleton said. “He swung around backward with his right arm.” In that arm Woods held a knife, Singleton said, and swung it toward the arresting officers, spitting on one of them.
Woods was arrested and has since been charged with felony aggravated assault on a police officer. He is currently in custody at the Madison County Jail, held on bail of $50,000. Singleton said Woods also will face misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
