Highland softball team defeats Marion in extra innings, advances to super-sectional
The Highland High School softball team is moving on in the IHSA Class 3A postseason.
The Lady Bulldogs defeated Marion 4-3 in nine innings in the Centralia Sectional championship game on Friday, June 3, and now will face Mahomet-Seymour at 4:30 p.m. Monday, June 6, at Millikin University in the super-sectional round.
A win against Mahomet-Seymour would send Highland (22-9) to state with a chance to repeat as Class 3A champions. The Lady Bulldogs now have won seven-straight contests.
Against Marion, Highland pushed across a run in the top of the ninth to prevail. The Lady Bulldogs scored twice in the top of the seventh, only to to see the Wildcats post two tallies in the bottom half to tie. Both teams then traded runs in the eighth before Highland won in the ninth.
Highland defeats Mount Vernon in semifinals
The Lady Bulldogs rolled past Mount Vernon 7-1 on Wednesday, June 1, in the semifinals of the Centralia Sectional.
The Wildcats defeated Triad 6-2 in the sectional semifinals and also had knocked off the Lady Bulldogs 9-5 at home in April.
Highland scored in five of seven innings against Mount Vernon to advance. The Lady Bulldogs posted two runs in the first, two runs in the third and then single tallies in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Breanna Habermehl helped anchor the Highland attack with a homer and two RBI, while Madalyn Trauernicht also collected two RBI. Alli Koerkenmeier and Sophie Parkerson (two hits) each added one RBI, while Maci Miles posted two hits and scored twice. Maggie Grohmann also scored two runs.
