Devotional: Who is really in control?

Our country was shaken recently by some major rulings made by the Supreme Court. Regardless of what side of the issue you are on, we can all agree that the decisions were historic.

As both sides of the issue try to evaluate what and how this has happened, the question of “Who is in control?” of our country will abound. As a Christian, I also have been asking myself that same question. Have you?

Though the answer to the question is easy to know, it’s not always easy to see.

God is “really” in control. He is on the throne and in complete control. He has to be or He ceases to be God.

Most Christians acknowledge this truth in “good” times but struggle with its implications during the “bad” times.

“How could things turn out this way if God is in charge?” they wonder.

The problem isn’t with God’s power or control. It’s with our perspective of life’s circumstances.

Anyone familiar with the Old Testament prophets know they ask this type of question all the time when Israel is going through tough times. God always gives the same answer: “Trust me. I know what I’m doing. I’m carrying out my plan precisely.”

“But I just don’t see it,” you may say. And that’s OK, too. You just need to believe it.

Paul said of God in Romans 11:34-36: “For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become His counselor? Or who has first given to Him and it shall be repaid to Him? For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.”
