St. Jacob & Marine News for the week of July 9

St. Jacob Homecoming to host ‘Family Night’ on July 16

St. Jacob Homecoming is July 16-18. There will be rides, food, and games to play, including a bags tournament on Saturday, July 18.

The third annual bags tournament will begin at 11 a.m. in the empty lot on the north side of the village hall. Registration is $40 per two-person team and can be done up to the day of the tournament. However, there is a limit of 24 teams, so early registration is suggested. Cash prizes will be awarded for first place ($200), second place ($100) and third place ($50). Call the village hall at 644-5666 for more information. Beer will be for sale during the tournament (no outside coolers). The St. Jacob Firemen’s Ladies Auxiliary will also be selling food and other refreshments.

New for 2015, Thursday night, July 16, will be Family Night from 5 to 9 p.m. There will be a ride ticket special — two for the price of one — this night. The Marine Sportmen’s Club will have its food stand open for dinner. Water and soda will also be for sale. There will be no alcohol sales during Family Night.

Enjoy live music, a parade with float contest, and even bingo Friday and Saturday nights.

On Friday night, the rides will open at 5 p.m., and the parade will begin at 7 p.m. Beaucoup Bottom Band will perform from 8 p.m. to midnight.

On Saturday, rides will open at 4 p.m., and the parade will start at 6:30 p.m. The band Black Top Boulevard will play from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Advance ride tickets will be available at St. Jacob Village Hall until noon on July 16.

Historical Society of Marine to meet

The Historical Society of Marine will meet Monday, July 13 at 7 p.m. in the Marine Senior Citizen Building, located at 101 W. Silver St.

Shirley Daiber will talk about the Tabor Sorghum Molasses Mill that was located south of Marine, off Lower Marine Road. Sorghum molasses was used a lot for sweetening in cooking and baking around the 1900s.

Some topics other to be discussed at the meeting are fundraising ideas and deciding on a tour. Information on a “Walking Tour of Marine’s Historical Structures” will be talked about, too.

Membership dues are due and are $5 for a single membership and $10 for a family membership for the year. All members and those wanting to be a part of the Society should attend to keep their membership active.

Your thoughts and ideas are important to the well being of the society. Mark your calendar for July 13 and plan to attend. For more information, call 644-3821.
