Police: Man caught breaking into Highland woman’s home

An Alton man is facing felony charges after police say they caught him in the home of a female co-worker in Highland.

Highland police charged Annan M. Gross, 31, with staking and burglary on July 10.

Police said the 20-year-old female victim came home just before 10 p.m. on July 8 when she noticed someone using a flashlight inside her house in the 700 block of 12th Street.

“The victim was about to enter her residence, and she saw someone inside her home,” said HPD Detective Chris Flake.

The woman ran to a neighbor’s home and called 911, Flake said.

Highland police, Madison County Sheriff’s deputies and Illinois State Police, including a K-9 unit responded.

Flake said police yelled for the man to come out of the house, but he did not exit.

“We went inside, along with the Illinois State Police K-9 unit, and the subject was hiding in the basement,” Flake said.

Flake said that Gross was not armed, and he was taken into custody.

“During the course of our investigation, we found out the suspect knew the victim,” Flake said.

They had a “work relationship,” according to Flake.

“We were just fortunate that she was alert enough that she saw somebody in the house, and she was able to get away in this situation,” Flake said.

Gross was denied bond and is in custody at the Madison County Jail.
