Highland’s Korte Recreation Center, parking lot are temporarily closed. What to know
Swim fans will have to find different options this week, as the Korte Recreation Center will be closed for renovations and maintenance.
The city-operated recreation center is closing for a week and its parking lot for two weeks to conduct annual maintenance, as well as installing new locker room floors and removing and replacing the entire parking lot.
The center will be closed Monday, Aug. 5 through Saturday, Aug. 10, and locker rooms will not reopen until Sunday, Aug. 11. The parking lot will remain closed until Saturday, Aug. 17. During that week when the center is open without a parking lot, visitors can park in the Glik Park lot to gain access, but the Young @ Heart van service will not be operated at Korte Rec Center.
“We understand that these overdue improvements will cause a temporary inconvenience, especially if the weather is uncooperative,” read the statement from Highland Parks and Recreation. “Additionally, we recognize that there is no ‘perfect’ time to perform these projects as well. Therefore, we simply ask for your patience and understanding these two weeks in order for us to meet our guests’ needs.”
The flooring purchase was authorized in June, at a total of $25,800 from Archway Industrial Coatings Inc. The parking lot will cost $402,198, and the winning bidder was Christ Bros. Asphalt Inc., also approved by the City Council in June.
The cost for the rest of the maintenance will be labor for a deep clean of the building, according to parks and recreation director Mark Rosen. The staff will scrub tiles, freshen up paint, dust rafters, etc.
While the rec center is closed, additional hours have been added to the outdoor Highland Community Pool. All Korte Rec Center members will be entitled to free admission to the community pool while the center is closed.
New hours include lap/walks 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, 6 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; and 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Open swim will be offered 1-5:30 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday; and 1-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
