There are lots of games for kids at Kirchenfest.

This weekend’s Kirchenfest will be bigger and better than ever, its organizers said.

Kirchenfest, the 45th annual festival for St. Paul Catholic Church in Highland, is set for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 22-23 on the church grounds.

“What makes Kirchenfest so special are the 1,000 volunteers from our parish and our community,” said Brad Scott, chairman of this year’s Kirchenfest. “Every stand is chaired by one of these volunteers.”

The festival is held rain or shine. But don’t worry. There are plenty of tents — 85 actually.

The festival will start with 5K and 2K runs, a.ka. the Strassenlauf, on Saturday morning along on the shaded and scenic streets of Highland.

The mega Flea Market is also back.

“Each year, Kim White and his crew continue to collect more treasures and organize it in such a way that customers can easily find what they want,” said Scott. “This is truly the Macy’s of Flea Markets. You have to so see it to believe it.”

Kirchenfest also means great food. Bavarian Skillet, Kirchenspuds (ribbon potatoes), chicken, fish, hamburgers are among the many food items that will be served.

There is also a beer lineup like no other festival.

“We will have 15 to 20 craft beers on draft,” Scott said. “We provide a wide range of beer options, both draft and aluminum bottle.”

There will also be plenty of new parking close to the church grounds. Scott said the old hospital lot on Poplar will be open for free parking, weather permitting.

The festival is all about fun and games. One new game offered this year will be laser tag, which will be located on corner of Lemon and Main (old hospital lot).

“This game will appeal to children of all ages,” Scott said. “One price gives you a pass during the times they are open (5 p.m. to close on Saturday and 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday).

In total, more than a dozen games will be offered.

There will also be a Kirchenride. The 50-mile and 15-mile bike ride starts the day on Sunday.

A Polka Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday with St. Paul’s new pastor, Father Pat Jakel presiding.

The ever popular chicken dinner will be served on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

There will also be nine bands performing, spread out over both days of the festival. Saturday’s band lineup has changed, and Dirty Muggs will be playing in the North Tent.

“The music they play is Top 40, and I would call them a Top 40 show band,” Scott said. “I have seen them in Edwardsville at St. Bonifest, and they are very entertaining. They also play some ‘old’ Jackson Five music. Quite entertaining for those in their 20s to those in their 50s.”
