New Douglas News for the week of Sept. 17


Troop 426 of New Douglas visited Camp Butterfly in Farmington, Mo. It was a fun experience for the girls. This was their first time climbing and rappelling. They loved to canoeing and paddle boating. “The bond between all the girls there is amazing. They are true Girl Scouts. They are there to support and encourage each other,” said troop volunteer parent, Candy Rensing. Rec Plex announces fall class schedule

The New Douglas Rec Plex, 310 S. Main St. in New Douglas, has announced its lineup of fall classes. All classes are six weeks and will begin the week of Sept. 21 and end the last week of October. There is a 25 percent multiple child discount and a 20 percent multiple class discount.

Classes being offered this fall include:

Senior Aerobics: Mondays or Wednesdays from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Combination of standing and chair exercises for all levels. Instructor is Elizabeth Loy.

Toddler Time: Wednesdays from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m. Varied activities for children ages 5 and under in the Toddler Room aimed to promote group play. Instructors are Linda Hunsinger and Elizabeth Loy

Toddler Tumbling: Thursdays from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Introduction to basic tumbling for children ages 2 to 5 utilizing the balance beam, mats and bar in our Toddler Room. Instructor is Elizabeth Loy.

Toddler Dance: Tuesdays from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Students ages 3 to 5 will learn to follow directions while learning basic tap, jazz and ballet in an informal setting. Instructor is Elizabeth Loy.

Basic Dance: Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Students ages 6 to 12 learn basic dance steps and memorization in the studies of ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop and creative movement. Instructor is Elizabeth Loy.

Intermediate Dance: Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Students ages 6 to 12 will already have a grasp of basic steps and memorization but need help learning technique in how to put all the steps together. Steps will be taught from the studies of ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop and creative movement. Instructor is Elizabeth Loy.

Aerobics & Resistance Training: Tuesdays or Thursdays from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. This class for students ages 16 and up is centered to promote weight loss through aerobics, resistance training and stretching. Instructor is Elizabeth Loy.

Line Dancing: Tuesdays from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. This class will include basic line dance technique and dances. Instructor is Valarie Root.

Couples Dance Private Lessons: This class will include two step and basic waltz steps. Contact Re Plex manager,Elizabeth Loy to set up a time with instructor Valarie Root.

NDVFD plans fall breakfast fundraiser

On Sunday, Nov. 8, the New Douglas Volunteer Fire Department will have a breakfast fundraiser from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the fire house, 105 E. Allen St. in New Douglas. Call (217) 456-6221 for more information.

Restaurant Open

Flyers Grill is now open for business. Services are drive-through and carry-out with outdoor seating available. The menu includes signature burgers, numerous fried sides, homemade pizza, gyros (coming soon), soft pretzels, old-fashioned Excel fountain sodas (Ski) and an extensive ice cream selection. Hours are Wednesday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Breakfast is available on Saturdays from 8 to 11 a.m. Call (217) 456-6555

Halloween Parade

The New Douglas Volunteer Fire Department is needing volunteers and participants for this year’s Halloween Parade. Contact Rachel at rtevis1@hotmail.com to enter a float, donate candy, or volunteer to be a judge or organizer.

Local Meetings

The Senior Citizens Club is looking for new members ages 55 and up. Visiting seniors are asked to stop by on Oct. 13 at 11:30 a.m. for a free lunch and bingo at the Community Center. Please consider joining.

The next monthly Village Board meeting will be Sept 21 at the Community Center at 7 p.m. The village will also have a committee meeting Oct. 5 at 6 p.m.

The next monthly meeting of the New Douglas Village Board will meet on Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Community Center.

The New Douglas Fire Department meets every Monday (except the third Monday) every month. The department is actively looking for new members. Minimum age requirement to join the department is 18. Contact Chief Danny Robertson at (217) 456-6221 for more information.

The American Legion meets every second Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

The Masonic Lodge meets every third Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Community Center

The New Douglas Community Center Hall can be rented for events. Contact Linda Huntsinger (618) 402-1726 to reserve a time.
