Run & Play 5K to benefit Hannah’s Playground

The Run & Play 5K Run/Walk/Roll will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Northside Park in Breese. Race time is set for 9 a.m., with the Fun Run to follow. Wheelchairs, strollers and the like are encouraged (no bicycles, please).

This year’s event will benefit the new Legacy Fund, established to provide future maintenance and/or improvements to Hannah’s Playground. While the surfacing and equipment are under warranty for several years, future replacement costs, as well as additions, are anticipated. Since opening the playground at the end of June, money provided by Legacy Fund inaugural members GCS Credit Union, Gerstner Plumbing and Kohl’s Cares, has enabled a front gate to be added for improved safety and stepping stones for pathways in the landscaping. Future additions may include a sidewalk around the back of the playground connecting it to the restroom facilities and a bike rack. Dirt work and grass seed will also be done around the playground site. The goal is to allow Hannah’s Playground to be a safe, inclusive place to play for many years to come.

Pre-registration cost is $25 with entry received or postmarked by Sept. 25. Register online at https://runsignup.com/runandplay5K. Online registration closes on Oct. 7. Paper registrations can be completed by using the form included with this article or downloading a form from www.hannahsplayground.com.

Race day registration is also available from 7 to 8:45 a.m. for $30. T-shirts will be provided to participants registered by Sept. 25. Additional shirts will be available on a first come, first serve basis on race day. Musicians will line the route at various locations. Awards will be presented to the top three male and female finishers overall. Awards will also be given to the top two male and female finishers in the following age brackets: under age 13, age 14-19, age 20-29, age 30-39, age 40-49, and age 50-plus. Additional medals (top three in age brackets) and/or age brackets (50-59, 60-69, and 70-plus) may be added as entries are received. The event may be canceled due to weather. Entry fees are non-refundable.

The Fun Run is free of charge and registration is not required. The Fun Run begins at approximately 10 a.m. Various “play breaks” line the route giving participants a chance to limbo or weave through a maze, along with other activities. As there is no charge for the Fun Run, a T-shirt is not included.

The Breese Optimist Club is sponsoring the Fall Fest immediately following the 5K. For a $10 wrist band, kids can enjoy games, bounce houses, face painting and barrel train rides immediately following the Fun Run through 6 p.m. Touch-a-Truck will be available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the Rainbow Ranch Petting Zoo will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Diane Cross, balloon artist, entertains from 4 to 6 p.m. (wrist band required).

The Craft and Vendor Fair runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., next to the Main Pavilion.

The popular Chili Cookoff and Homebrew Contest, by Excel Brewing, kicks off at noon and ends at 5 p.m.

Rusty Rodz Car Club will be on hand from 1 to 4 p.m. A variety of bands will entertain the crowd from noon to 9 p.m. at the bandstand.
