Devotional: Doing things the right way

While reading the instructions at a roofing project, a volunteer said: “I thought you knew how to shingle. I’ve installed thousands of squares of shingles over the last 45 years, but I still read the instructions before starting.

“This habit started 26 years ago after completing a large project. Nine months later, the spring winds came lifting many shingle tabs, even tearing some off. The shingle manufacturer and I came to look at what was happening. We saw three causes for the problem:

“1. The church bought too cheap of shingle for the application.

“2. The shingles never sealed down.

“3. The shingles were not nailed in the right spot, according to the instructions.

“No. 3 caused me grief! I had always nailed shingles ‘in the tar line,’ just like I was taught. Regardless, my crew was at fault, and I suffered the financial cost to re-shingling the roof because we did not ‘follow the instructions of the manufacturer.’

Proverbs 14:12 says: “There is a way that seems right to man, but its end is the way of death.”

In Matthew 7:13-14, Jesus says there is only one way to Eternal Life (Heaven). Every other way leads to destruction. In verses 21-23, Jesus speaks of people appearing before Him in Heaven who thought they had followed the “right way.” But Jesus tells them “Depart from me you who practice lawlessness.”

Have you read God’s instruction book, the Bible, and considered if you are on the way “that leads to eternal life”?

Or are you on “the way that seems right”?

You can know for sure before meeting Jesus “up there.” (1 John 5:13).
