Highland Middle School is looking for veterans to speak to students during the school’s Veterans Day activities on Tuesday, Nov. 10.
The goal is to pair a veteran or two with every teacher in the building for the entire school day. Veteran presenters would arrive at 7:15 a.m., meet their teacher, report to class and then present five to six different times (for about 35 minutes each) during the day to 25-30 middle school students at a time.
The best classroom presentations engage kids in discussion, some type of hands-on items for the kids to pass around (medals, uniforms, pictures, etc.) while the veteran presenter is talking.
Classroom presentations will end at 1:30 p.m.
All veterans would then be invited to an all-school assembly in our gymnasium. During this assembly, around 200 local veterans have typically joined the student body to listen to the HMS band, chorus and a key note speaker.
If you are interested in serving as a classroom speaker, Assitant Principal Vice Hughes at or call 651-8800.
