Highland area police briefs for Dec. 7-13

Police: Glen Carbon man intentionally drives into train

A Glen Carbon man is dead after he apparently crashed his car, intentionally, into a train in Logan County.

According to police reports, Charles I. Wood, 36, dropped off his 4-year-old daughter at the side of Old Route 66 in Broadwell and then drove his Mitsubishi Eclipse around a set of crossing gates, turned onto the train tracks, and drove his car head-on into the front of an approaching freight train.

Wood was pronounced dead at the scene Friday afternoon. His daughter was in the custody of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

Highland man charged with felony theft

Highland police charged Arnold L. Terry, 53, of Highland with felony retail theft. Police allege Terry took items from Walmart. The charge was enhanced to a felony because Terry had a previous theft conviction in Randolph County from January 2015.

Highland man faces felony drug charge

Highland police charged Tony B. Hereford, 21, of Highland on Dec. 10 with felony possession of cannabis with intent to deliver. Police allege Hereford possessed more than 30 grams of cannabis.

HPD misdemeanor warrant arrest

▪ Eva M. Coon, 22, of Belleville was arrested by HPD on Dec. 9 on a warrant from Maryville police for failure to appear in court on a traffic charge. She was also wanted in St. Clair County for failure to appear in court on a charge of driving while having a suspended/revoked license. Highland police also charged her with driving while having a suspended/revoked license. She was turned over to Maryville police.

▪ Jeffery J. Kelley Jr., 25, of Highland was charged with violation of driver’s license restriction, and illegally using an electronic communications device.

Dec. 10

Dec. 11

▪ Barry R. Smithey, 64, of Highland was charged with disorderly conduct for allegedly taking several pictures of the victim after being told to stop, making sexual innuendos and and stroking the hand of the victim.

▪ Benjamin T. Kruep, 27, of Carlyle was charged with speeding.

Dec. 12

▪ No tickets issued.

Dec. 13

▪ Justin C. Cain, 27, of Highland was charged with domestic battery for allegedly pushing a female household member’s head into a door frame, causing bruising.
