St. Joseph’s Hospital to offer stroke support group

To support caregivers and stroke patients, HSHS St. Joseph’s Highland is now offering a Stroke Support Group. Sponsored by the Southern Illinois Division of Hospital Sisters Health System, support groups are being hosted in Highland, as well as St. Elizabeth’s in Belleville and St. Joseph’s in Breese.

The support group meeting for January will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28 in the Sullivan Conference Room at St. Joseph’s Highland. The topic for this month’s meeting is “General Medical Information About Stroke.” The same topic will be covered at the meetings held from 2 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 3, in the Millennium Room at St. Elizabeth’s, and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25 in the Heritage Room at St. Joseph’s Breese.

Alison Kennedy, Emergency Services stroke coordinator at St. Elizabeth’s, serves as the support group coordinator.

“Our goal is to foster a better understanding of stroke recovery, rehabilitation and prevention of recurrence while providing a way for survivors to meet others with similar challenges,” Kennedy said. “In addition, caregivers and family members are offered an open atmosphere for sharing and supporting each other.”
