Engineering firm wins award for Veterans Honor Parkway

The engineering firm responsible for the design of Highland’s newest thoroughfare was recently honored for its part in part in making the new roadway a reality.

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois honored Oates Associates at group’s recent Engineering Excellence Awards luncheon for the civil engineering firm’s work on Veterans Honor Parkway in Highland. Oates was presented with the Special Achievement Award in field of transportation.

Veterans Honor Parkway provides a by-pass on the northeast side of Highland, connecting major routes and preventing traffic congestion. Veterans Honor Parkway extends 1.7 miles and provides easier access to destinations, including a community park. But the corridor is more than a connecting roadway. It is a tribute to Highland veterans who tragically lost their lives while serving their nation. Banners are positioned along the roadway in honor of the veterans, kiosks with bronze plaques memorialize their lives and dedication to their country, and the road was renamed to Veterans Honor Parkway in admiration of their service.

The Engineering Excellence Awards Competition recognizes projects of engineering achievement by Illinois consulting engineering firms. Entries are judged on the basis of engineering excellence, the degree to which the client’s needs are met, and the benefits to the public welfare and private practice of engineering.

Special Achievement Awards are given for those projects worthy of special recognition of the engineer and the owner/client for achieving engineering excellence.

Environmental Operations Inc. and Quality Testing and Engineering Inc. also provided consultation on the project.
