Alhambra news for the week of March 10

First Baptist Church of Alhambra Easter program

The choir of First Baptist Church in Alhambra will be performing an Easter program under the leadership of Jeana Craft. The performance will follow the path Jesus took from Calvary to the open tomb. A Champion of Love will begin at 7 p.m. at the church, 209 West Main St., on Saturday, March 19. A fellowship hour with refreshments will follow the program. On Sunday, March 20, during the 10:15 a.m. worship service, the choir will perform the Easter program once again. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Alhambra Primary

This past week, students got to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Students wore their pajamas to school and got to see a video of Dr. Seuss work and enjoyed special cookies to commemorate the special day.

The Eureka Math Night will be held at Alhambra Primary on Thursday, March 10 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for classes from K-5. There will also be a Norwax fundraiser the same day from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Snacks, products and catalogs will be available.

The Spring Scholastic Book Fair will be held March 7-10. Books may be available after the Eureka Math Night.

Alissa Korsemeyer won the Young Authors contest at the county level.

Students that have participated in the Six Flags and Raging Rivers contests will be receiving their tickets soon. They will not be replaced if lost. Fifty students completed the Six Flags tickets, and 75 students received the Raging Rivers tickets.

The school calendar for next year is completed, and the first day of school for the 2016-2017 year will begin on Aug. 17.

Box Tops have been collected and turned in with a total of 5,418. The PTO received a check for $541.80. Thanks to the Alhambra and Grantfork communities and all the parents and grandparents that particpated.

Card Shower for Thelma LeBegue

A card shower will be held to commemorate the 93rd birthday of Thelma LeBegue on March 18. Cards may be sent to Thelma at: San Gabriel Memory Care, 2509 Frank Watson Parkway, Apt. 6, Highland, IL 62249.

Fire Department Scholarship

The Alhambra Fire Department is offering a $500 scholarship.

Applicants must be living in the Alhambra Fire District and be a graduating senior in 2016.

Forms may be picked up at Highland High School, or call John Mindrup at (618) 409-3941 to get the applications. The deadline for applying is April 15.

Applications will be assessed and recipient chosen by an independent company.

Vincent Cemetery to hold clean up day

The clean up day for Vincent Cemetery will be Saturday, April 16. Volunteers are asked to be at the cemetery at 8 a.m. Bring any type yard tool you think may be needed, such as, shovels, rakes, weed whips, etc. In the event it is raining, volunteers will try for the next weekend. Call Ron Mindrup at 488-7108 with any questions.

Kindergarten registration

Registration for children who will be entering kindergarten this fall can be done by phone. Call the school office at 488-2200 and answer a few short questions. In April, parents will receive a letter with details of all items needed for full registration. Kindergarten visitation will be on May 6. Children must be registered to attend.
