Western Illinois University junior Emily Manley, a 2013 graduate of Highland High School, was honored at the 76th annual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Conference in New York City this past March 5 as she won a first-place national award at the national media competition.

Manley won the Best Community News Award for her radio story, “Downtown,” a radio story on 88.3 (WIUS-FM) “The Dog” that was about Macomb’s Downtown Development Coordinator Andrea Keene and what she was going to do better in the Macomb Area.

“There are 1,500 people who attend this prestigious national media competition every year and tons of people who put in for the award,” Manley said. “There were five finalists in my category, and they announced the finalists during Thanksgiving break. And then they announced the national winners on Saturday night in New York. I have to say it’s a pretty neat feeling knowing I won best community news reporting in the nation.”

Manley was one of three reporters from Western Illinois University who were finalists, with two of them becoming national winners. In addition to Manley, Sam Jensen and Lonnie Wilkins received recognition as finalists for Most Creative Program for their show, Throwback Thursday, on 88.3 “The Dog.” Jensen ended up winning the Best Newscast Award for his Oct. 29 news report to join Manley as a national winner.
