Young Author winners announced in Highland School District

The Madison County Regional Office of Education will host the 26th Annual Young Authors’ Conference at Edwardsville High School on Saturday, April 23.

The purpose of this conference is to recognize student authors for their success in writing stories and poems during the 2015-2016 school year. Approximately 400 students in kindergarten through eighth grade, representing both public and private schools throughout Madison County, are involved in the event.

This year, storyteller and author Bob Kann will be the featured presenter. Kann leads a fast-paced session as he shows students how to tap their “subconscious” creativity and use ready-made structures to create stories. He will describe his own challenges as a writer and through improvisational storytelling, young writers will discover new abilities to identify subjects for stories, acquire skills for creatively developing stories, and they’ll learn strategies for confronting writer’s blocks. Kann uses magic, juggling, and punishing puns to share his joy of language.

The Highland School District Young Authors Contest winners who will be attending the conference in Edwardsville are:

▪ Alhambra Primary: Alissa Korsmeyer, third grade.

▪ Highland Primary: Dyna Lentz, kindergarten; Lillian Behl, kindergarten; Natalie Chalfant, first grade; Ben Augustin, first grade; Rick Wang, second grade; and Aubrey Frey, second grade.
