Alhambra news for the week of March 24
Salem UCC Egg Hunt
Salem United Church of Christ in Alhambra will have an Easter egg hunt on Saturday, March 26 at 10 a.m. at the church. Each participant is asked to bring a food item for the food pantry. Following the hunt, there will be donuts, muffins and fruit served. The hunt is for children ages newborn to fifth grade.
The church is looking for volunteers to help fill eggs. Volunteers may pick up eggs in passageway and fill them with small items such as, wrapped candies, stickers, coins, and mini bottles of bubbles. The church needs the eggs back by Friday, March 25.
Gilbert Hosto Memorial Egg Hunt
The Gilbert Hosto Memorial Easter Egg Hunt, sponsored by the Alhambra Jaycees, Community Club and the Village Board, will be Saturday, March 26 at 1 p.m. on the east side of Alhambra Township Park, behind the dance hall. The hunt is for children ages newborn to fifth grade.
Glow-in-the-Dark Egg Hunt
The Alhambra Jaycees Glow-in-the-Dark Easter Egg Hunt will be Saturday, March 26 at 8:30 p.m. at the Alhambra Township Park baseball diamonds. The hunt is for children ages newborn to fifth grade.
Township to hold annual meeting
The Annual Alhambra Township meeting will be held on April 19 at 7 p.m. at the Alhambra Township Center. The April meeting will follow immediately after the annual meeting.
Fire Department Scholarship
The Alhambra Fire Department is offering a $500 scholarship.
Applicants must be living in the Alhambra Fire District and be a graduating senior in 2016.
Forms may be picked up at Highland High School, or call John Mindrup at (618) 409-3941 to get the applications. The deadline for applying is April 15.
Applications will be assessed and recipient chosen by an independent company.
Vincent Cemetery to hold clean up day
The clean up day for Vincent Cemetery will be Saturday, April 16. Volunteers are asked to be at the cemetery at 8 a.m. Bring any type yard tool you think may be needed, such as, shovels, rakes, weed whips, etc. In the event it is raining, volunteers will try for the next weekend. Call Ron Mindrup at 488-7108 with any questions.
Community Club
The next meeting for the Alhambra Community Club will be held on Monday, March 28 at 5:30 p.m. at Maedge’s Restaurant. New members are always welcome.
Alhambra Primary
Students will return from spring break on Tuesday, March 29. Grades 2 and 3 will have a field trip on the day they return to class.
A total of 59 students had perfect attendance for the third quarter.
The next PTO meeting will be held on April 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Grantfork Elementary.
Alhambra Yard Sales
The annual Alhambra Yard Sales will be held from May 5-7 this year. Maps will be available, compliments of Yvonne Green of Equity Fifty-Five. Call Jessie Ketchum at (618) 580-5314 to have your sale put on the map for free.
Alhambra Morning Glories 4-H Club
The Alhambra Morning Glories have had a busy month. On Feb. 8, the club enjoyed a demonstration by Mackenzie Myer about poultry. This was followed by cool facts about Taiwan. Afterward, everyone enjoyed Rice Krispie treats for refreshments. On Feb. 13, members went to the Edison Entertainment Complex, and on March 7, members went to the Hitz Memorial Home to play bingo with the seniors that live there.
Alhambra-Leef Homemakers
Members of the Alhambra-Leef Homemakers met at the Alhambra Township Center and welcomed two ladies visiting the area from Estonia. Rutt Tunike and Ene Paks participated in the inbound portion of International Homemakers Exchange, with Eleanor Gregory as host.
Tunike is a retired biology teacher and currently manages a bed and breakfast. Paks is an English professor at a vocational college. They will experience Illinois as they visit certain Illinois Association for Home and Community Education.
The lesson was given by Carol Sconyers and Gail Ohren. The lesson was “Five Ingredients Fix.” Hostesses for the evening were Faye Brown and Alice Stille.
Hitz Home News
The Hitz Memorial Home will not be having an Easter Egg hunt, but residents will be dyeing Easter eggs on Saturday, March 26.
Birthday wishes go out to Marilyn Irvin on March 2; Rosalie Pingolt on March 3; Diane Bloome on March 18; Alfred “Blackie” Emshousen on March 19; Clarence “Gus” Baum on March 22 and Marion Williams on March 28.
