Devotional: No one ‘wins’ an argument with God

One part of Chris Matthews’ interview of Donald Trump became a national news story. The subject was “abortions,” and if made illegal, would Trump “punish” the mother who had one. His answer — and “walking back” of that answer since then — stirred up a lot of people on both sides.

This article isn’t about my opinion of the question, answer, or Mr. Trump. It’s about a later exchange between the two.

Trump asked Matthews, who is a faithful Catholic, about his church’s stance on abortion. Matthews didn’t want to go there. Trump pushed again and got Matthews to say: “I accept your (the Catholic Church) moral authority.” To which Trump replied: “But you don’t live by it, ’cause you don’t accept it. You can’t accept (it).”

Reading this, you may wonder: “Why is this even important?”

Good question.

The Catholic Church’s stand on abortion, which is the same as our church, is not an opinion. It’s not based upon our country’s current morality. Another decade, century, or millennium, will never cause us to change our stand and belief.

The reason?

Our stand on abortion is based upon the Word of God, the Bible. We have chosen to stand with God on this and many other “moral” issues facing and dividing our country.

Matthews respect for his church does not cover over his lack of respect and submission to God. No one ever “wins” an argument, sways, or changes God. He is “always the same, yesterday, today, and forever.” He speaks authoritatively, because He is the unchanging Sovereign of all. Matthews, and others like him, have it all wrong. Their arguments are not with Trump, or any other politician, when it comes to these “moral” issues. Their arguments are with God.
