St. Joseph’s Hospital to host ‘Superhero Run/Walk’
For the second year, HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital (Highland) is giving local residents an opportunity to live out their dreams of being a superhero — for at least a day — and get some exercise at the same time.
The HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Superhero Run/Walk event will be held Saturday, April 30, on the campus of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland. This year’s event is sponsored by and benefiting the HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary.
Participants are encouraged to dress up as their favorite superhero while completing a 5K fun run/walk course or participating in a 1-mile fun run/walk. The 5K Run/Walk is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. and the 1-mile Run/Walk starts at 9:30 a.m. The Superhero Run/Walk event will take place rain or shine.
This year’s event will feature a very special guest, former Biggest Loser contestant Sonya Jones. As a finalist of NBC’s The Biggest Loser Season 16, Jones lost the title of The Biggest Loser by .01 percent, the closest margin of loss in the show’s history. As a result of her experience on the show, she successfully manages weight loss and personal fitness, and is no longer at risk for diabetes. Jones joined the HSHS Medical Group as outreach representative in March. Her primary focus is acting as a health and wellness advocate on behalf of HSHS Medical Group, as well as a spokesperson for key service lines such as Joslin Diabetes Center and LeadWell Corporate Health and Wellness. Jones will be available along the Run/Walk route to take photos with participants and answer questions about healthy living.
“We are very excited to have Sonya join us for this event,” said Amy Liefer, director of Communications for St. Joseph’s Hospital. “Her role with the HSHS Medical Group aligns perfectly with our event and helping promote healthy living in our community.”
Runners and walkers of all ages and fitness levels are welcome to participate and are not required to dress up as a superhero. Whether participating with family members, friends, or individually, everyone is invited to come spend a beautiful spring day running or walking on the hospital’s new campus and enjoy special activities along the routes during the event. Water and fruit will be available to event participants after completing their route courtesy of SODEXO. Water stations will also be available along the routes. No pets will be allowed at the event.
