Highland letter carriers to host food drive
Members of the Highland Post Office’s National Association of Letters Carriers will be collecting food and personal care items to benefit the Highland Area Christian Service Ministry’s Food Pantry on Saturday, May 14, as part of their annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Letter carriers will be dropping off bags for residents to fill with food and personal care items and then place in or next to their mailbox on Saturday, May 14 before their usual mail delivery time.
Items most needed at the Highland Food Pantry at this time are Hamburger/Tuna Helper, cereal, instant mashed potatoes, canned fruit, canned soup, canned mixed vegetables, beets, spinach, sauerkraut and jelly in plastic jars. The Highland Food Pantry, also, distributes personal care items such as toilet paper, facial tissue, shampoo, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, diapers, etc. These items are always in high demand by food pantry clients as personal care items cannot be purchased with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (food stamps).
Please do not donate frozen food, homemade food or home-canned items, or food in glass jars. In keeping with good food-handling and food-safety procedures, food that is opened, damaged or out of date will be discarded by the food pantry in the sorting process.
All items collected by the Highland Post Office will be taken to HACSM and will be distributed locally to area needy families. If for some reason a resident did not receive a bag from their letter carrier, feel free to use whatever bag/box you have available and place it in or near your mailbox on May 14. No special bag is necessary.
