Jakey in June barbecue festival is this weekend

Locals will have the opportunity to eat competition barbecue prepared by some of the best pitmasters around this weekend at the annual Jakey in June Bar-B-Que Cook-Off.

Barbecue teams will sell their delicious wares on Friday, June 3 from 6 p.m. until it’s gone; on Saturday, June 4 from 4 p.m. until supplies run out; and on Sunday, June 5 from noon to 3 p.m. There will also be a wine and beer garden.

In addition to great food, there will also be great music.

The Jason David Cooper Band will entertain from 7 to 11 p.m. on Friday

BYGTH Youth Band will hit the stage from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and The Robert Perry Band with the Original Mojos will play from 7 to 11 p.m. on Sunday.

A Kids-Q BBQ Cook-Off will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Competition barbecue judging starts at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 5.

Car show to be held at church

Central Baptist Church, 9652 U.S. Highway 40, west of St. Jacob, will hold its first annual car show on Saturday, June 4. Registration is from 9 a.m. to noon. Admission is free. Antiques, hot rods, classics, rat rods, bikes, trucks, tuners, imports, all are welcome, as are all regional car clubs. This is a family atmosphere. No alcohol will be allowed. There will be awards for Best Overall, Best Custom and Pastor’s Choice. The rain date will be July 2.

Book Signing

Jennifer Hobbs Zahn will be signing copies of her book “That Old Barn” at the Charles Gravius Memorial Library, 202 E. Silver Street in Marine, from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 4.

Pamphlet gives info on self-guided history tour of Marine

The Marine Historical Society has selected 10 historic homes (100-plus years old) for a driving tour in Marine. A pamphlet has been made as a guide and for information about these homes. The pamphlets are now available at the Marine Bradford Bank and the Marine Coin Co. The tour can be done at your leisure.

Marine Historical Society compiling list of veterans

The Marine Historical Society and the Becker-Reding Post 702 American Legion of Marine have combined efforts to honor all veterans from the Marine area. A list of all veterans (living and deceased) is in the process of being compiled. If anyone knows of any veteran from the area, call (618) 972-0725.

Marine Library Board to meet

The next Marine Library Board meeting will be July 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Marine Library. The public is invited.

Volunteers needed for hot air balloon event

The “Hot Air Balloons Over Marine” Committee of the Historical Society is seeking volunteers to help with the many children’s activities and operations of this grass roots event. To volunteer, contact Bill Weder at 887-2008 or (618) 530-5809.
