St. Jacob Homecoming is July 14-16
St. Jacob Homecoming will kick off this year with a Family Night on Thursday, July 14. There will be a carnival ride special from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday night only, where two people ride for the price of one. There will be no alcohol sales during Family Night.
There will be parades on both Friday and Saturday night. The parade will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and will start at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. There will be a new route for this year’s parade. The parade begin at the park and will go down West Main to N. Douglas St., then turn onto W. 5th Street, before turning onto Olyvia Drive and ending back at the park. There will be prizes given for the best parade entries — $300 for first place, $200 for second and $100 for third. Parade winners will be announced Saturday evening.
Rides and food stands will open at 5 p.m. on Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday. (No outside coolers or beverages will be permitted.)
There will also be live music on Friday and Saturday from 8 p.m. to midnight. Blacktop Boulevard will play on Friday, and Cold Shot will perform on Saturday.
The fourth annual bags tournament will also be held on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. You can pre-register your two-person team by July 2 for $30 (includes a coolie). All teams that register after July 2, including the day of the tournament, will pay $40. The tournament location will be in the open lot on the north side of Village Hall. Beer will be for sale during the tournament. (No outside coolers). Cash prizes will be awarded — $200 for first place, $100 for second, and $50 for third.

Marine Masonic Lodge to host blood drive
A Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center blood drive will be held on Saturday, July 23 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Marine Masonic Lodge. Those who donate can register to win in a car or gas. There will also be a free breakfast for donors. If you have questions or to make an appointment, call the Marine Coin Co. at 887-2008.
BBQ competition to be held in Marine
The Madison County Fair Association will hold its first “Chillin’ and Grillin’ for the Fair” barbecue competition on Aug. 20 and 21 at Marine City Park, which is located in the 300 block of N. Duncan. There will be $4,000 in prizes given away. Judging will be done by the St. Louis BBQ Society. All proceeds will benefit the Madison County Fair. More information will follow later.
Volunteers needed for hot air balloon event
The “Hot Air Balloons Over Marine” Committee of the Historical Society is seeking volunteers to help with the many children’s activities and operations of this grass roots event. To volunteer, contact Bill Weder at 887-2008 or (618) 530-5809.
