Highland area police briefs for July 4-10

Editor’s note: The following incidents were listed among the official reports of local law enforcement agencies and court clerks. Readers are reminded that an arrest or charge does not constitute a finding of guilt. Only a court of law can make that determination.

Farm worker briefly trapped in grain silo near Troy

A farm worker was temporarily trapped in a grain silo outside Troy Monday afternoon.

The worker was trapped inside the grain silo and was unable to escape on his own, according to Troy Police Chief Brad Parsons. “The grain is like sand; it probably collapsed on him,” Parsons said.

Two farmers were trying to help the worker when Troy police arrived. The farm, located on Shafer Road outside Troy, is actually in county jurisdiction, but Parsons said he responded because they were closer than the nearest sheriff’s deputies.

Parsons said he was not sure what the worker was doing when he became trapped, but he might have been leveling off the grain and it shifted. He described it as a minor farming accident.

“It looks like he’s going to be okay,” Parsons said of the work. “This is the best outcome. I grew up farming, and this is the best-case scenario.”

Parsons said the worker may be transported to a local hospital to be checked out. The worker’s name was not immediately released.

Summerfield home damaged by fire

A home in Summerfield was heavily damaged in a fire Sunday afternoon.

Lebanon-Emerald Mound Volunteer Fire Department Chief Matthew Berberich said firefighters spent at least four hours on scene at the 400 block of Mill Street battling the house fire. Berberich said the residents of the house were not at home at the time of the fire.

No one was injured in the fire.

The fire chief said the fire was “electrical” in nature.

“The house had substantial damage,” Berberich said.

Sugar Creek, O’Fallon and St. Jacob fire departments assisted at the scene Sunday.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, the Lebanon-Emerald Fire Department thanked several community members for bringing drinks and ice to firefighters working the structure fire.

“And after all the exhaustion from the picnic, a call came in for a structure fire this afternoon in Summerfield,” the fire department wrote. “We’d like to thank the following people who helped out bringing us ice and water and Gatorade. Debbie Mikeals Missey, Mike’s Place, Rick and Tina Korte, Johnny and Cindy Doss, Sylvia Doss, and of course the FLFD who is always there for support.

Illinois Sheriffs’ Association warns of phone scam

The Illinois Sheriffs’ Association advises residents to be aware of a telemarketing campaign that has been soliciting money under the association’s name.

Though they do use a direct mail campaign, the association never conducts any fund raising over the phone, the group said in a statement.

Residents should contact their local Sheriff’s Department if they receive one of these calls. If possible during the call, they should also try to glean any more information about the solicitors and report it.

In light of this phone campaign, the organization reminds Illinois residents to never give out information over the phone, to ask more about the solicitation, and to heed any “unbelievable” offers.
