Southeastern District HCE meeting to be held at Salem UCC

This is the final week to make reservations for the Association for Home and Community Education Southeastern District meeting that will be held on Monday, Aug. 15 at Salem United Church of Christ in Alhambra. There will be a meal, followed by entertainment by Barb Kay, who will be portraying Mary Todd Lincoln.

Salem Confirmation Reunion

Salem United Church of Christ in Alhambra will host its fourth annual Confirmation Homecoming on Sunday, Aug. 7. All Salem confirmands are invited to attend. Special notice will be given to the confirmation classes of 1946, 1956, 1966 (50th anniversary), 1976,1986 1996, 2006 and 2016. A special worship service will be held at 9 a.m. Following the service, everyone is invited to join in the celebration with brunch and fellowship.

Health Fair date set

This year’s Health Fair will be held at the Alhambra Township Park Hall on Friday, Nov. 4. The Alhambra-Leef Home Extension will be coordinated the event and booking the vendors. Alhambra Township will pay for the flu shots for all residents living in the village of Alhambra and Alhambra Township. Freddie Riepshoff will do flu shot registration. Further information will be published closer to the event.

Township offers emergency cooling center

Due to the extreme heat during the month of July and chances of it continuing through August, Alhambra Township Supervisor Jerry Frank has deemed the Firemen & Legion Hall as an emergency cooling center in the event the power is off for an extended time.

Leef Senior Citizens to meet

The Leef Senior Citizens invite local seniors in the area to meet on the third Tuesday of each month (Aug. 16 this month) at 6 p.m., starting with a pot-luck (bring your favorite dish).

The meeting is held at the Leef Township shed, which is handicap accessible and located at 12905 Niggli Road, north of Grantfork (the corner of Niggli and Route 160). After the potluck, there is a short meeting (bring a funny joke), and the group plays cards (pinochle or euchre). Its an evening of fellowship and meeting old friends or making new friends.

The club has members from Highland, Grantfork and Alhambra area and welcomes anyone who might be interested. For further information, call Sharon at (618) 334-8217.

Leef Township meeting changed

Leef Township’s Sept. 7 meeting has been changed to Wednesday, Aug. 31 at 8 p.m. at the Leef Township Building meeting room.

St. Gertrude holding PSR class registration

St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Grantfork is currently taking registration for the PSR class that will begin in September. Children from 5 years old to eighth grade are welcome to attend. Classes will be held on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. in the church hall. Supplies must be ordered soon to make sure there is enough for all. If your child was enrolled last year, they are already enrolled for the 2016-2017 year, unless the church is notified that they will not be attending. All registration and payments will be finalized at the first class on Sept. 7.

Results for St. Gertrude Chicken Dinner announced

The results for the 2016 chicken dinner at St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Grantfork have been finalized.

The total served at this year’s dinner, which was held on of June 5, was 1,269 (108 more than last year).

Receipts from dinner tickets sold was $6,490, carry-outs and other food sold was $6,585, and raffle ticket donations were $5,519, for a total gross of $18,594.

Expenses were: advertising, $465.43; tent, $300; food and supplies, $5,504.44; cash prize raffle, $1,000, for a total of $7,269.87.

That made this year’s profit $11,324.13. This is $2,019.72 more than last year.

Homecoming set for Aug. 19 & 20

This year’s homecoming will be on Friday, Aug. 19 and Saturday, Aug. 20. The theme for the children’s parade will be “Vintage Toys.” The parade will begin at 6:30 p.m., both nights. For further information, contact Bryan Rutz (618) 616-8045. There will be a baseball tournament on Saturday, Aug. 20 and Sunday, Aug. 21. Adam Vosholler is the chairman of the ball tournament.

Center Schools PTO Color Run

The PTO will hold a 5K and a 1-mile run on Oct. 1, 2016 at Grantfork Firemen’s Park. Check in will start at 7:30 a.m., and the 5K run begins at 9 a.m. The 1-mile run will begin at 9:30 a.m. To register for the event, go to www.eventbrite.com or registration may be made at the National Bank of Alhambra. Farmers Market running on Thursdays

New Douglas Village Market is open under the New Douglas Township Park Pavilion every Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m., with B&K Bakery goods, Beckerts Meats, the Family Garden produce and fruits, Share the Soap handmade soaps and skin care products, Tupperware.

The market is a good time to meet friends, share a Popsicle or ice cream bar from the park concession stand and go home with some really good food.

The market is always looking for new vendors to share their local products.
