Alvin F. “Al” Schroeder, 93, of Bartelso died on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015 surrounded by his family.

Visitation will be held on from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4 and again on Wednesday, Aug. 5 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Moss Funeral Home in Germantown. A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 10 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Bartelso, with Father James Buerster officiating. Burial will follow in St. Cecilia Cemetery in Bartelso.

He was born on April 2, 1922 in Bartelso to Henry and Caroline (Eilers) Schroeder. Following his service in the Navy during World War II, he married Wilhelmine Ripperda on Aug. 6, 1946 in St. Rose. She passed away on May 19, 2013.

Mr. Schroeder was a carpenter and worked for many years for Fournie Contracting in Belleville until his retirement in 1987. Upon his retirement, he built a home in Bartelso and spent his time woodworking, playing cards and simply enjoying his family and retirement.

He was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Bartelso and its Mens Sodality. Since May 1942, he was a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Bartelso Council 4745. He was also a member of the VFW posts in Bartelso and Trenton and the American Legion of Bartelso.

He is survived children, Patricia Albers of New Baden, Mary Lou (Paul) Sutphin of Belleville, Sharon (Ken) Albers of Germantown, Susan (Bob) Hoff of O’Fallon and David (Cathie) Schroeder of Aviston; a son-in-law, Jim Robke of Aviston; grandchildren, Mike (Sharon) Robke, Lynn (Mike) Mallott, Cheryl (Tim) Heath, Angie (Terry) Becherer, Mark (Devon Hayden) Albers, Robyn (Brian) Friederich, Clint (Chrissie) Albers, Kathleen (Polly Johnston) Wildhaber, Keith (Victoria) Wildhaber, Raquel (Craig) Koerkenmeier, Jared (Lisa) Schroeder, Elizabeth (Ryan Thole) Schroeder, Alicia (David) Hobart and Ryan (Katie) Johnson; a step-grandchild, Katie Hoff; great-grandchildren, Kaley and Tyler Robke, Cheyenne and Todd Heath, Garrett and Abby Becherer, Claire and Cami Friederich, Laney and Brandon Albers, Allison and Jacob Koerkenmeier, Lacey and Sophie Schroeder, Shawn Noel, Lindsey and Brett Yearian and Riley Johnson; a step-great-grandchild, Amanda Bobby; and a step-great-great-grandchild, Ethan Bobby; brothers, Frank (Agnes) Schroeder of Bartelso and Cletus Schroeder of Germantown; and sister-in-laws, Dorothy Schroeder and Joanie Schroeder, both of Germantown, Mary Ann Brueggemann of Belleville, and Janet Ripperda and Elinor Ripperda, both of Highland.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Barbara Robke, grandchildren, Todd Robke and Rhonda Albers; a step-grandchild, Keli Hoff; sisters, Adeline Schroeder, Frances Wieking, Laurentine Koczur, Cornelia “Babe” Schomaker and Alvina Heet; brothers, Edward and Henry; and brothers- and sisters-in-law, Henry Heet, Arthur Schomaker, Oscar Wiecking, Alphonse, Vincent, John, Margaret, Raymond, Edward, Ruth, Joseph, Virginia, Clarence and Jerome Ripperda, Alex and Josephine Hood, Herman and Catherine Buscher, Henry Koczur and Dolores Schroeder.

Memorials can be made to St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Heartland Hospice, Paula Tebbe’s Care Givers or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
