James Lawson Freeman, 90, of Troy died on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2015.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24 at Calvary Baptist Church in Edwardsville. Kalmer Memorial Services in Lebanon is in charge of arrangements.

He was born March 21, 1925 in Kenton, Obine County, Tenn., to Solomon Willis and Mary Margaret (Buford) Freeman. He married Virginia L. Bost on Oct. 25, 1952. She preceded him in death in 2014.

Mr. Freeman was a World War II veteran, serving in the Marine Corps 4th Division from 1943-1945. He had tours in Roi-Namur, Tinian, Saipan and Iowa Jima.

He graduated from Memphis State University in Memphis, Tenn., in 1950.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Edwardsville and was ordained as a deacon on Oct. 19, 1952 at West Florissant Baptist Church. He served the Lord and his church as a deacon at Florissant Valley Baptist Church in Florissant, Mo., and Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Meadowbrook.

He had resided in Florissant, Mo., Black Jack, Mo., Alhambra, Wood River, and most recently, Troy.

He is survived by a son, Dr. James C. Freeman of Chesterfield, Mo.; a daughter, Julie (Craig) Bernreuter of Troy; grandchildren, Dr. Nichole Freeman, DVM, Kristopher Freeman, Garrett Bernreuter, Olivia (Mohanad) Meqbil, Holly Freeman and Collette Bernreuter; a great-grandchild, Lana Meqbil; a sister, Elvira Cox of Humboldt, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lawrence Freeman, who died in 1980; a sister, Mary Ida (nee Freeman) Morse, who died in 2013; brothers-in-law, Robert Morse, who died in 1982, and Karl Bost, who died in 2005; and a sister-in-aw, Nadine “Deanie” (nee Parks) Bost, who died in 2015.

Memorials may be made to the American Bible Society, Billy Graham Evangelical Association, or Calvary Baptist Church.
