Eugene B. “Gene” Korte, 91, of Highland died on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2015 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1 and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 2 at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 2 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Highland, with Father David L. Peters, retired pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Highland.
He was born on Oct. 19, 1924 on the family farm, north of Pierron, to John and Emma (Benke) Korte. On Feb. 10, 1948, he married Margie D. Pacatte, and she passed away on June 28, 1977. On Dec. 29, 1979, he married Mary Haldi Tschannen. She survives in Highland.
Mr. Korte attended Immaculate Conception School in Pierron. He worked for Wm. F. Mewes & Co. General Store in Pierron.

He served with the U.S. Army for 2 1/2 years, with 15 months duty overseas with the 2nd Infantry Division during World War II.
He worked for Steiner’s Men’s Wear and later purchased the shoe division from the Steiner family. He was the owner and manager of Korte’s Shoe Department Store for 24 1/2 years. In 1979, he worked as a real estate broker for Ralph Korte Realty Inc., later named Terra Properties.
He enjoyed golfing, playing baseball, playing cards (bridge) and Saturday lunch with family.
He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, the Knight of Columbus, VFW Post 5694, American Legion Post 439, and he was former member of the Highland Country Club and Highland Rotary Club.
Other survivors include sons, Nic E. (Mary) Korte of Grand Junction, Colo., and Brad E. (Jeannie) Korte of Highland; a daughter, Jeannie M. (Scott) Korte of Highland; a step-son, Rick C. (Gail) Haldi of Highland; grandchildren, Ann E. (Ryan) Leonard of Grand Junction, Colo., Adam E. (Cara) Korte of Grand Junction, Colo., Aaron E. Korte of Cornville, Ariz., Julie M. Korte of St. Louis, Mo., U.S. Navy Ensign Matthew J. Korte of Norfolk, Va., Alexander C. Korte of Highland, Nisa B. (Jason) Schmitz of Highland and Daniel S. Korte of St. Louis, Mo.; great-grandchildren, Zia K. and Koen M. Leonard of Grand Junction, Colo., and Anton J. and Brea L. Schmitz of Highland; sisters, Lenore “Toots” Windsor of St. Louis, Mo., and Dorothy M. “Dot” Kimberlin of Highland; and brothers, Gerald G. Korte of Highland and Marcellus W. “Popeye” (Agnes) Korte of St. Rose
He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jerome Korte, who was killed in World War II, Alfred J. “Al” Korte, who died on July 17, 1998, and Joseph G. Korte, who died on Jan. 4, 2010; and a sister, Magdalen M. “Madge” Haenny, who died on Nov. 11, 2006.
