Herbert Henry Schmidt, 97, of Alhambra died on Friday, Oct. 30, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2 at Salem United Church of Christ in Alhambra. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2 at Salem United Church of Christ in Alhambra, with the Rev. Jerry Amiri, senior pastor, and and the Rev. John Mindtrup, assistant pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery in Alhambra.
He was born on Nov. 24, 1917 in West Alton, Mo., to George and Mary (Stormer) Schmidt. On March 3, 1946, he married Elda L. Braundmeier. She passed away on June 29, 2014.
Mr. Schmidt lived in West Alton, Mo., and then moved to Alhambra in 1944. He farmed until 1971 and then worked at Hitz Memorial Home in Alhambra as a maintenance man until 1973. In 1987, he retired as a custodian for the New Douglas school. He was also a maintenance man for Salem Cemetery. He enjoyed reading, yard work and tending to his garden.
He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ. He was also a member of the Salem UCC Men’s Fellowship, Leef Senior Citizens, and was a past Leef Township trustee.
Survivors include sons, James H. (Lynn) Schmidt of Highland, Ronald H. (Rhonda) Schmidt of Alhambra and Lee A. Schmidt of Chicago; grandchildren, Kimberly L. Schmidt of Highland, Kristin R. Schmidt of Highland, Christopher R. Schmidt of Alhambra, Jeremy S. Schmidt of Chicago and Garrett R. (fiancee Alisia Klostermann) Schmidt of Alhambra.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Bertha Mennemeier; and brothers, William Schmidt, Frank Schmidt, Charles Schmidt, George Schmidt, Albert Schmidt and Edward Schmidt.
