Paul E. Vogelbacher, 80, of Highland died on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2015 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11 at Highland City Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland.
He was born on Feb. 16, 1935 in Highland to Edwin and Catherine (Wilhold) Vogelbacher. On Sept. 1, 1956, he married Joanne Barbara Schott. She passed away on Feb. 7, 2004.
Mr. Vogelbacher grew up in Marine, where his father owned a bakery. He was a 1952 graduate of Highland High School.
He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He worked 19 years for McDonnell Douglas. He then worked for Shell Oil Refinery in Wood River as a safety inspector. He retired at age 59 in 1993.
He and his wife moved to Sun City, Ariz., in 1993. After her death, he returned to Highland in 2004.
He enjoyed swimming, golf and bowling. He traveled extensively in retirement. While working, he enjoyed annual fishing trips to Florida.
He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara A. (Melvin) Fowler of Highland; sons, Mark A. (Tammy) Vogelbacher of Highland and Brad A. (Janet) Vogelbacher of Highland; grandchildren, Amber N. (Travis) Eilers of Highland, Travis R. Vogelbacher of Highland, Katelyn M. Vogelbacher of Highland, Alex B. Vogelbacher of Highland, Ryan A. Vogelbacher of Highland and Madelyn J. Vogelbacher of Highland; a great-grandchild, Payton N. Eilers of Highland; and a sister, Dolores Schwartz of Sun City, Ariz.
He was also preceded in death by his father, who died on Sept. 1, 1981; his mother, who died on Dec. 29, 1986; and a sister, Carol May Vogelbacher, who died at age 2.
Memorials may be made to Masses or a charity of donor’s choice.
