Richard L. Schwarz, 83, of Highland died on Friday, Nov. 27, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 27 at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. A private memorial service will be held on Monday, Dec. 28, with Father David L. Peters, retired pastor of St. Paul Catholic Church in Highland, officiating. Burial will be in Highland City Cemetery.

He was born on Nov. 29, 1931 in Highland to Roy and Anna (Oberbeck) Schwarz. On Aug. 8, 1964, he married Joan M. Musil. She preceded him in death on March 20, 2008.

Mr. Schwarz graduated from St. Paul High School in Highland with the class of 1949. He served active duty in the Korean War with the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1955. He graduated Summers College of Commerce in East St. Louis on Feb. 16, 1956.

He worked for the Moulton-Bartly Shoe Factory until it closed. He also worked at the Danche Brothers powdered eggs plant. In 1956, he began working at Scott Air Force Base, retiring with 30 years from the Budget Office.

In retirement, he enjoyed fishing, playing golf, visiting his children and traveling. He was a well-known card player. He had bowled in several leagues and championship teams in traveling leagues. He was inducted into the Greater Carlyle Bowling Association Hall of Fame in Nov. 3, 2001. He had bowled a 300 game and had two holes-in-one in golf. (His 300 hundred bowling score and one hole-in-one came in the same year). He was a member of the Highland Country Club, where he spent many hours. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports.

He was also a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Highland and Lee Iten American Legion Post 439 in Highland.

Survivors include a son, Timothy K. (Tammy) Lewis of Highland; a daughter, Patti A. (Richard) Akright of Aurora, Colo.; a daughter-in-law, Lee Lewis of Bakersfield, Calif.; a brother, William R. Schwarz of Florissant, Mo.; grandchildren, Alicia M. (David) Neckanoff of Long Beach, Calif., Benjamin J. Lewis of Bakersfield, Calif., Erin M. Akright of Englewood, Colo.; Emily J. (Jimmy) Warnecke of Highland, Brett R. (Natalie) Lewis of Highland and Kyle J. Akright of Broomfield, Colo.; great-grandchildren, Isaac Lewis of Bakersfield, Calif., Collin James Warnecke of Highland, Caleb Timothy Warnecke of Highland, Mia Jean Lewis of Highland and Benjamin Jacob Warnecke of Highland; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, who died on Feb. 7, 1963; his mother, who died on Nov. 6, 1992; a son, Scott E. Lewis, who died on Nov. 28, 2010; and a brother, Robert R. Schwarz, who died on April 12, 2002.

Memorials may be made to the Highland Animal Shelter or American Legion Post 439 in Highland.
