Stephen Hellmann, 80
Stephen S. Hellmann, 80, of Aviston died on Friday, Dec. 18, 2015 in Germantown.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 21 and again on Tuesday, Dec. 22 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Breese. The Aviston American Legion will hold services at 6 p.m., and the Aviston Knights of Columbus will hold services at 6:15 p.m. on Monday evening at the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 22 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston, with Father Daniel Friedman and Father James Buerster officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery in Aviston.
He was born on Dec. 26, 1934 in Aviston to Henry and Elizabeth (Ottensmeier) Hellmann. On Sept. 16, 1958, he married Alice Johnson at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese. She survives in Aviston.
Mr. Hellmann was a veteran of the United States Army and later retired from CSX Railroad.
He was a very active member of St. Francis Catholic Church, where he served many Masses. He was also a member of the Aviston Knights of Columbus Council 11110, and was a past commander of the Aviston American Legion Post 1239. He enjoyed going to church, gardening, volunteering at the school, and gathering and shelling pecans.
Other survivors include his children, Bonnie Hellmann of Edwardsville, Beckie Gaskill of Edwardsville, Larry (Jan) Hellmann of Germantown and Guy Hellmann of New Baden; grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Jeffrey Gaskill, Nathan (Sara) Dierkes, and Brianne and Abby Hellmann; great-grandchildren, Rylee, Lacey and Brynlee Dierkes; sisters, Sister Mary Magdalene, PHJC, of Donaldson, Ind., and Rita (Ralph) Heimann of Collinsville; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth (Ron) Osborne of Port Washington, Wis., Arthur “Butch” (Margaret) Johnson of Orlando, Fla., and Audrey Johnson of Breese; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Tim Gaskill; sisters, Genevieve Heimann and Bernadine Kussatz; brothers, Joseph Hellmann and Cletus B. Hellmann; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Edward Heimann, Richard Kussatz, Patricia Stallings, Robert Johnson, and Jane and Stanley Feldmann.
Memorials may be made to St. Francis Catholic Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
