Vernon Miener, 86
Vernon W. Miener, 86, of Grantfork died on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5 and from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6 at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6 at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, with the Rev. Charles West, retired pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Highland City Cemetery.
He was born on June 18, 1929 in St. Louis, Mo., to William and Alice (Duft) Miener. On June 16, 1951, he married Lucille M. Rinderer. She passed away on March 24, 2009.
Mr. Miener grew up in St. Jacob. He moved to Grantfork, where he was a livestock, dairy and grain farmer. He was also a laborer and a member of the Laborers Local 680 in Highland (presently Laborers Local 397 in Granite City), where he served as business manager for many years.
He and his son, Larry, started Miener Nursery, where they raised and planted large trees. He enjoyed his life working, farming, fishing, and spending time with his family.
He was a member of Grantfork United Church of Christ, Masonic Lodge 583 A.F. & A.M. (Masons) in Highland, and he was a former member of Laborers Local 397 in Granite City.
Survivors include daughters, Lynn M. Miener of Glen Carbon and Carolyn S. Miener of St. Jacob; a son, Larry L. (Denise) Miener of Pocahontas; grandchildren, Kelly (Mike) Evans of Troy, Jamie (Jared) Krieg of Worden, Courtney (Andrew Dillow) Miener of Highland; and great-grandchildren, Maddox Krieg and Owen Evans.
He was also preceded in death by his father, who died on Feb. 9, 1986; his mother, who died on April 18, 1987; a brother, Donald P. Miener, who died on April 1, 2005; and a sister, Ruth A. Meffert, who died on Nov. 15, 2015.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Shriners Hospitals for Children.
