Andrew J. Schrage, 89, of Highland died on Monday, Feb. 8, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 on Friday, Feb. 12 and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13 at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Highland, with Father Pat G. Jakel, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Highland.

He was born on Jan. 9, 1927 in St. Rose to Anton and Frances (Middeke) Schrage. On May 4, 1954, he married Florence T. “Flo” Korte. She survives in Highland.

Mr. Schrage grew up in St. Rose and attended St. Rose Grade School, and he graduated from Aviston High School. He worked at the Alton Box Board before entering the U.S. Army, where he served with active duty during the Korean War.

After his honorable discharge, he went back to work for Alton Box Board. He later purchased his father’s farm, northwest of St. Rose, and farmed for more than 30 years. He also worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier for 20 years. He lived on the farm from 1955 until 1991, when he and his wife moved to Highland.

Mr. Schrage volunteered at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland and was recognized for having performed more than 2,000 volunteer hours. He enjoyed reading, country music and spending time with his family.

He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Lee Iten American Legion Post 439 and Knights of Columbus Council 1580, all in Highland. He was former member of St. Rose School Board, Clinton County Board, St. Rose Men’s Sodality and American Legion Post 252 in Breese.

Other survivors include sons, Michael A. (Karolyn) Schrage of Carl Junction, Colo., Mark C. (Silvia) Schrage of Elgin, Ill., Matthew P. (Lisa) Schrage of Highland, Marvin M. (Lori) Schrage of Lafayette, Ind., Myron B. (Linda) Schrage of Nashville, Tenn., and Marcel E. (Lisa) Schrage of Troy; daughters, Patricia A. (John) Donjon of St. Louis, Mo., Charlotte A. (Allen) Schmitt of St. Charles, Ill., and Lucille A. “Lucy” Schrage of Belleville; grandchildren, Karissa (Nolan) Christian, Kathryn (Mike) Tucker, Kyle Schrage, Simon Schrage, Chelsie (Josiah) Gates, Preston Donjon, Sophia Donjon, Allayne (Mike) Weaver, Clayton Schmitt, Drew Schmitt, Brandon Schrage, Jake Schrage, Garrett Schrage, Mackenzie Schrage, Jackson Schrage, Brooklyn Schrage, Harper Schrage, Alyssa Schrage, Jordan Schrage, Adrian Schrage, Evan Schrage, Lindsey Schrage and Justin Schrage; great-grandchildren, Kaylee Tucker, Brynlee Tucker, Ethan Tucker and Embyrlyn Rivera; and sisters, Marie Isert of Highland, Bertha Kampwerth of Breese, Dolores Granning of Humboldt, Tenn., Ruth (Clarence) Korte of Highland and Florence (David) Luechtefeld of Okawville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandchild, Cameron Schrage, who died in 2003; brothers, Edmund Schrage, Clarence Schrage, Anthony “Tony” Schrage, David Schrage and Vincent Schrage and Casean Schrage, who both died in infancy.

Memorials may be made to Highland Health Care Center.
