Marie Horstmann, 91, of Highland died on Friday, Feb. 12, 2016 at Faith Care Center in Highland.

Visitation will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Highland. A memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Highland, with Father Pat G. Jakel, pastor, officiating. Mrs. Horstmann donated her body to science at St. Louis University Medical School in St. Louis, Mo. Arrangements are being handled by Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland.

She was born on March 2, 1924 in Aviston to Frank and Agnes (Stoff) Luitjohan. On Oct. 15, 1946, she married Vincent C. Horstmann. He passed away on Aug. 24, 2010.

Mrs. Horstmann grew up in Aviston, attending the school there. She had worked at the Moulton-Bartley Shoe Factory in Highland. After attending beauty college, she was a beautician for many years, including some 28 years that she operated a beauty shop at Faith Countryside Homes Atrium Apartments.

She had baked wedding cakes, was an accomplished seamstress, and she enjoyed ceramics and painting. She was a nurturing person to her family and others. She was devoted to her faith and in service to others.

She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and a former member of the Altar Sodality and St. Paul Funeral Choir.

Survivors include a daughter, Charlotte A. (Gary) Isaak of Highland; sons, C. Dale (Sally) Horstmann of Collinsville, Gary J. (Donna) Horstmann of Highland, Wayne A. (Cheri) Horstmann of Harrisburg, Ill., and Curt G. (Tamie) Horstmann of Highland; grandchildren, Laurie L. (Lance) Whorton of Navarre, Fla., Kris A. (Bill) Dempsey of Highland, Jeffrey A. (Karen) Isaak of Deltona, Fla., Jennifer M. (Nathan) Korte of Trenton, Shannon M. Horstmann of St. Louis, Mo., Greg J. (Marianne) Horstmann of St. Charles, Mo., Casey J. (Rich) Blanchette of Goodland, Kan., Patrick V. (Kristin) Horstmann of Murphysboro, Ill., Joe B. (Jessica) Horstmann of Highland, Nicole E. (Jason) Joyner of Roscoe, Ill., U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Matthew K. (Meg) McBride of Twentynine Palms, Calif., Jackie K. (Kent) Manning of Highland, Ben J. (Bethany) Horstmann of Glen Carbon, Matthew R. (Jamie) Horstmann of Edwardsville, Jake C. (Jackie) Horstmann of Carterville, Ill., Stephanie T. Horstmann of Belleville, Cory M. (Lisa) Horstmann of Collinsville, Shaun C. Horstmann of Highland; 28 great-grandchildren; sisters, Rita A. Warnecke of Highland, Dolores G. Zobrist of Highland, Mildred E. “Millie” Frey of Highland, Jane E. (Pete) Korte of Trenton, Pat Brandmeyer of Albers; and a brother, Paul (Mary Ann) Luitjohan of Highland.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Charles Horstmann, who died at age 3 weeks on June 26, 1948; a grandson, Brian D. Isaak, who died on Dec. 7, 1997; sisters, Anna M. Spihlmann, who died on Jan. 23, 2010, Clara M. Emig, who died on Dec. 29, 2013, and Agnes R. Goebel, who died on Oct. 18, 1975; brothers, Francis A. Luitjohan, who died on July 29, 2006, John H. Luitjohan, who died on Feb. 16, 2006, Joseph Luitjohan, who died on May 30, 1980, and Aloysius G. “Al” Luitjohan, who died on June 26, 1993.

Memorials may be made to Christian Activity Center (CAC) in East St. Louis or the Faith Countryside Homes/Atrium Apartment Activity Fund.
