Blanche L. Hediger, 80, of Highland died on Friday, April 8, 2016 at Faith Care Center in Highland.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12 and from 8 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 13 at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 13 at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, with the Rev. Christopher W. Hill, senior pastor of Evangelical United Church of Christ in Highland, officiating. Burial will be in Jamestown Cemetery.

She was born on June 28, 1935 in Clay County, Ill., to Arthur H. “Otts” and Edith I. (Koehler) Werner. On June 28, 1952, she married Loyd L. Hediger in Highland. He passed away on Oct. 6, 2001.

Mrs. Hediger graduated Highland High School in 1952. After her marriage, she and her husband lived on a farm nine miles south of Greenville. They moved to Highland in 1961.

She started working for the Highland Community Schools after her children were in school. She worked in the office of the primary and upper elementary school for more than 25 years and was well liked by administrators, teachers, parents and students.

Together, she and her husband farmed 38 acres in the Wisetown area of Bond County. Summers were spent camping, tending their vegetable garden and preserving vegetables and jelly. She acquired her Master Gardener certification in 2003 and continued her membership in the Highland Garden Club.

She started collecting salt and pepper shakers at age 13. She had collected nearly 500 sets. She was an avid card player (spades, euchre, and pinochle) and enjoyed jigsaw puzzles. All above, she was tirelessly devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren, family and friends. She was also a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ.

Survivors include sons, Jerome D. (Nancy) Hediger of Highland and Roger S. (Lana) Hediger of Highland; daughters, Karen J. (Kenneth) Hicks of Murphysboro, Ill., and Kathy L. (Tim) Steinmann of Highland; a sister, Joyce E. Ford of Highland; a sister-in-law, Connie Werner of Highland; grandchildren, Polly A. (Brandon Knight) Hediger of Mohave Valley, Ariz., Aaron L. (significant other Stephanie Huelsmann) Hediger of Highland, Abby M. Hediger of Highland, Wesley A. (Stacey) Hicks of Oakville, Mo., Kendra L. (Gary) Rushing of Murphysboro, Ill., Timothy J. Steinmann II of Highland and Alanna K. Steinmann of Highland; step-grandchildren, Cheryl L. (Bobby) Manton of Marine, Katelyn R. DeNap of Highland; great-grandchildren, Drake D. Knight of Mohave Valley, Ariz., Cashius H. Knight of Mohave Valley, Ariz., Kylee E. Hediger of Highland, Emma L. Hicks of Oakville, Mo., Mya J. Rushing of Murphysboro, Ill., Ethan W. Rushing of Murphysboro, Ill., and Elly May L. Junge of Highland; a step-great-grandchild, Jessica E. “Jessie” (Justin) Stumpf of Grantfork; step-great-great-grandchildren, Carter Stumpf of Grantfork and Estella Mae Stumpf of Grantfork.

She was also preceded in death by her father, who died on Nov. 4, 1982; her mother, who died on March 18, 2012; and a brother, Raymond Werner, who died on Feb. 7, 2015.

Memorials may be made to Highland Garden Club Glik Park Project or Education Plus at Highland Elementary School.
